Kaibab Early Rifle Success

Greetings to all - The early rifle hunt was a great success for the two hunters I was with (see photos). First buck was taken opening morn in the burn; I'd seen this buck several times during the bowhunt & we scouted him the day before rifle opening day. Congrats to tph247 for a great buck! Mass, super fronts & deep forks w/double brow tine on right side.

2nd buck was taken on day 7 in the rain on the plateau in a very special place that has produced some whoppers in the past. Alek's patience & persistence paid of with this big buck.

I'll let y'all guess spread/scores, etc. - to me these are two classic Kaibab "grey ghosts" that are trophies in anybody's book with some wonderful memories. To those who believe the Kaibab early rifle hunt is strictly a "meat hunt" w/little chance for a big buck, I actually favor the early hunt for a chance at a big one. Thanks to tph247 & Alek for letting me spend this hunt with them & showing them some of the best muley hunting in the West. I plan to be back on the plateau during the late hunt helping another hunter. Good luck to all!

I would say the top one is about 28 inches wide and a 182 gross .
the second pic I cant see it well enough to tell, but then again Im just guessing. you will have to let us know . both great bucks I would be happy with congrats to the hunters.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-15 AT 03:04AM (MST)[p]Those are some really nice bucks. Congrats to both of you guys and everyone involved. I would guess the first buck at 180 4/8". Do you happen to have a front pic of that second buck?

Thanks rockymtnhunter! I had a great time getting to know you and Alec on that trip and I hope we can do it again. I am glad to see Alec got a great buck but I knew he would. There is a lot of energy dedication and passion for hunting in him. rockymtnhunter is very generous and has an in depth knowledge of the Kaibab. His experience there is second to none!

I am having trouble uploading pictures on this site but I will email some to rockymtnhunter to post. I had my buck green scored but I will wait to post it as not to spoil the guess work. other photos will help.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-15 AT 04:05AM (MST)[p]I'll take a guess at the 2nd buck at 177. I could be off but it's just a guess. Again, awesome bucks. Are you going to let us know what they scored?

>Both are Awesome bucks! I'll guess
>buck one at 179" and
>the second buck at 181"..

I was thinking the were both about 180 as well. The brow tines on the first buck are really nice.

To All:
Nice try estimating score - Here's a couple of other photos that give a better perspective of the size & points of first buck, sorry the photos are a little fuzzy, but I couldn't get the orig photos sized small enough to post --- gross score=196-1/8! Deep forks, XL "swoopy" fronts & high!

Thanks for posting Dan. Those pics almost look like a completely different deer! He looks all of 196 from those last 2. Great job fellas.

True, the 1st photo really understated the overall size, mass & pt length of this buck. It all added up to a great scoring buck! Hopefully, I'll find another during the late hunt. We saw several other bucks similar to this one during the bowhunt & early season.

Yeah it almost looks like a different deer in the second pics. That second buck is also probably bigger than I guessed.

Congrats on some awesome bucks! What did the 5x4 score. Just curious to see if we were close cause we got some good footage of him before the hunt. Congrats again!

Not sure how you are scoring , but clearly it is not 196. I would struggle getting 180 out of either buck. 4 mass measurements per side, main beam, inside spread, not outside and tine length. The tape measure has to be tight too. :))

Thanks for the feedback. My buck officially scored 193 1/2" B&C gross. The net score is 187. The split eyeguard was a deduction.
