My 15yr old boy drew this tag this year we are planing on getting there the wednesday before the opener and stay till the closer. we plan on camping on 108 where we can find a spot. Just wondering if there has been enough snow to push them down to wintering range or off williams mtn. I bought the otc deer tag in august just to learn the terrain and roads i seen a lot of elk up high on williams mtn area just not sure if they move out of this area later in the year. From what i have read there is a lot of road hunters so we plan on getting far as we can from the roads i have been going over maps the flatline maps are amazing!!! Thanks in advance for any info!

There is a lot of snow in there this year and it is going to be cold. There will be a lot of road hunters and a lot of people getting stuck.. it will be a tough hunt and yes some elk have already moved out of the pines but there is still some in there.

Good Luck

Well, maybe keep "lots snow" in perspective. There has been 2 storms that have dropped snow over the last two weeks. First was about 2", the one early this week was about 4". Some elk have moved lower but there are still lots in the pines. It's pretty hard to get away from roads in 8 but definitely juts getting out of the vehicle will help. GL.

Its not hard to get away from the roads at all in unit 8. I hunt this unit every year for deer otc archery & elk when I can get drawn. Elk are all over the unit & unless the snow is pretty deep which is highly doubtful the elk will usually stay up high. Glassing is useless in 8 unless you are hunting the lower country. If you put your boots to the ground & hunt hard you will get into elk. Sycamore Canyon has pockets of elk it is rough & steep & gets lots of pressure. Good luck you have a good tag, but I won't lie the late rifle hunt is tough.

Thanks for the info!! Looks like we are going to get some weather during the hunt and it is going to be pretty cold! I know its going to a pretty tough hunt but im just looking forward to getting over there and spending time in the hills with the family and hoping to get my boy on some elk and it would be a plus if we can get any bull elk on the ground. We camped on 108 in august for the deer hunt do you think 108 is still accessible with a truck and toy hauler? i dont plan on going to far in on 108 as soon as i find the first open camp spot.

Thanks again,
Jason

Depending on the weather you will be ok on 108. Perkinsville road out of Williams is paved & 108 is usually in good shape. There are some big camping spots for toyhaulers just off the asphalt & 108. Those spots usually get grabbed fast cuz they can hold big groups. There are good camp spots everywhere you just need to get there early. You should already be there setting up camp. Lots of guys pull their trailers over the weekend before & drop them off then comeback Thursday night after Thanksgiving. Good luck hunt hard & let us know how you did!!

My boy got his first elk!!! We hiked are butts off and it payed off opening morning he made a great shot and then the work began! Thanks for all the responses on the this forum! Hope the pics loaded its my first time posting pics!

Thanks,
Jason
