Curious if anyone archery elk hunted 3A/3C or 27 last year. Looking to burn 14 points and with my unit 1 tag yanked out from under due to legislation, searching elsewhere. Thanks.

btk,
Still lurking the site with your fake handle, along with all the other "disabled profile" SFW lovers, like your outfitter brother? Sorry that little HB2072 thingy didn't work out for your contingent who thinks stealing primo tags from the public for outfitter entitlements is a good plan. Unfortunately, when it comes to government, there's no shortage of corrupt politicians seeking shortcuts to funding at minority constituent's expense. But if my tag has to be stolen, I'd much rather have the proceeds go to the AZF&G rather than a corrupt private organization pocketing 90% of the proceeds so they can build themselves luxury homes on former mule deer winter range while their fat cat client buys my tag at auction. But that's just me. At least I'll get a lesser unit tag out of the deal for 14 years of paying and waiting. Certainly better than nothing!

I haven't heard anything of AZSFW lately. Seems like the whole corrupt board of directors, along with their high paid lobbyist, dried up and blew away. Maybe hiding out in a water tank on the strip? What happened to all their great wildlife projects?

Unit 1 archery tags were our goal for the last 14 years since we last drew. However, legislation passed last year dropping the NR preference tags to 5% eliminated our chance of drawing that tag until I'm using a walker.

He won't be assured a tag in the bonus pass because of the new 5% cap rule. So he's looking at a lesser demand unit instead

Zim,
I hunted unit one last year. I didn't think it was that great. The elk were not as vocal, they don't come into calls. Seen 3-4 350 type bulls, No 370 plus. Passed on 320 330 type bulls. Had a fun time. To say that there were a lot of 340-360 type bulls that HF said is not the truth. There are some big bulls. They have had too many permits according to some, the past few years.
If you can hike a lot 27 may be the unit. Good luck.

Ken - check out Koury Guide Service for the bulls they kill in 3A/3C to give you an idea of the quality. 27 is a great unit as well, cant really go wrong with either. You will have a good hunt either way.

Ken - the other thing to consider is that the Early rifle hunt in 27 is before the archery hunt this year. So, the archery hunt is the 16th - 29th, which are great dates... but there 40 rifle tags right before your season.

Dang with 14 points I wouldn't even be considering unit 1. Do a bit of homework brother, you are in pretty good shape in my opinion.

Uhhhhhhh..........ya no. I've studied the unit options long enough to know we got slim pickens considering there's 1,100 guys above us and all the preference tags just got cut 50%. The 14 point pool took the biggest hit from this legislation. Just tryin to salvage what we can.

Dang that sucks you could have drawn 3a/c or 27 three or four years ago (archery) under the old draw system.

It's all about the money for AZG&F.

Lawyer up and sue the %$#$&@#'s.

Almost every state has been doin this crap for years, throwing the senior point holders under the bus. That's what legislators do, screw minority constituents. And it's not going to change, only get worse. Maine went as far as peddling 10 packs of bonus points to anyone for $50, as many as anyone wants! They didn't partially correct this BS until 40% of the applicants quit applying. Attorneys specialize in stealing. I'm now desperately trying to burn points anywhere I have 15+ in. I see the future. I just want out from these schemes ASAP.

zimmers,

you'll have a tough time taking your socialist platform anywhere with much success in the hunting world. take those points and stick them in a bowl, boil for 15 minutes, and enjoy what you will end up with early...

BTK please just go away. Nobody likes you here.

..............except for Birdman & Don Peay-to-Play.

Zim
I feel your pain. I was hoping to sneak a 3A/3C or 27 archery tag last year with 11 points but it didn't happen as several people must have decided to dump their points before the pending rule change. Now I'm trying to decide if I should keep waiting for a much longer time to draw one of these tags or drop down to the next lower tier of quality. If I remember correctly, I think NMPaul's son might have had the 3A/3C tag last year and did well.

1+++++++++++ Thank God I live in AZ where we do not have to deal with corrupt tag thief's like they have in Utah. I am glad we got rid of them

I was in 3c for three weeks not the year I thought it would be 1 not much better so take your pick any of those units good 27 good if you can walk.

I live in U1....27 is not too far away.

You're going to have better rut action in 27 this year due to the later time frame. I wouldn't worry too much about the early rifle hunt before your hunt. There will still be some great Bulls around. Having most archery hunts start on the 9th is going to make it a mediocre at best rut timing for most archery hunts. Pockets will be lively all over the state but most Bulls get going real strong that last week of September. Unit 1 and 27 both had less than favorable rutting action last year during the archery hunt. It's been difficult the past couple of years. The quality of Bulls are still prevalent in both units but are not what they were post 2 years wallow fire. You can find 360-370 class Bulls with a bit of time in the field. A few monsters still exist but the 400" monsters are a lot fewer and farther in between.

Might be a good year to consider burning points in 27. They upped the overall tag numbers in the unit. It's only a matter of time before it takes a toll on the number of quality Bulls that will be in the unit.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-16 AT 02:48PM (MST)[p]Don't know what happend on last post anyway ,Zim if You really want a tag put in 20 years like I did and drew premium tag last year. Now I just moved back to AZ. where I am from to up my chances again. In 96 I drew Early rifle bull in unit 1 with 3 points. Maybee I will get lucky again.............BUll!

I've drawn unit 1 twice in the past 20 years and have enjoyed great hunts. I drew unit 27 archery 2 years ago. Didn't harvest a bull but had a great hunt seeing lots of nice bulls. On the downside, people were everywhere. Lost out on 3 real good bulls within range that were bumped. Awesome hunt and great memories.
