I am debating burning my 14 points for late deer in unit 27. I bowhunted elk there but I have no idea what quality and quantity of deer it produces.

What could I expect? Reasonable chance at a 180? Are they rutting hard then (last 2 weeks of December)?

LAST EDITED ON May-20-16 AT 09:43PM (MST)[p]There are 180+ bucks there. It is mostly pretty rough country, but it can be a great hunt if you are willing to put in the time and effort. There will be some rut activity early in the season and good rut by the end. With only 25 tags, it isn't hard to get away from other hunters.

There are definitely 180 inch bucks there. But to be honest I haven't seen many of them killed. Lots of pictures and people talking about them but I think they are getting pics of these deer way way out in the middle of nowhere in the blue wilderness area which is incredibly rough country. Have you looked into the Kaibab? Also unit 3c where I live is producing some great bucks the last few years. They dropped tags again this year so should be even better. We kill 180"+ deer there every year. Generally biggest bucks killed are 190" and a few 200 inchers have been killed there. But average size you see will be 165-170". Scouting hard and hunting hard I'd say 180 is very obtainable.
