I was very happy to learn that I drew a 12B West Late rifle tag. I'm a diy guy and haven't went outfitted or guided before. With this tag I was thinking of going guided. Any suggestions from the board on quality outfitters for this hunt?

Great tag, Congrats!

A couple of good ones are HPO (high point outfitters). I have hunted with HPO several times and they will work hard for you.

Another outfitter I have heard good things about is Johnsons Brothers guide service out of Fredonia, Although I have never hunted with them.

Can't go wrong with either Arizona Strip Guides or Dave Mathews Outfitters. I have hunted with both and they both have excellent guides and equipment.

Another option i would look at is Ryan Hatch at Muley Crazy!! I'm sure there is plenty of options so check out several and pick the one you feel is your thing!!! Good luck be looking forward to a story and pics !!

Please dont make any decision without giving Don Martin a call. He is a dedicated MMer and knows your hunt area as well as anyone. He posts on this forum and you can find his contact info easily.

Don is a good choice IMO the guy always have some great bucks with clients sitting behind them.
I didn't draw if I had it would of been Don getting the call.

A3 trophy hunts is an outstanding group of guys. They have full time guides that are on the kiabab/ strip 5 days a week running cameras and scouting. They have killed numerous 200"+ bucks over the years on the kiabab. Call chad Rhoton and he will be sure to take care of you.

Every one of those guiding companies have guys running trail cams and out there 5 days a week. I'd definitely check Ryan hatch, az strip guides, Don Martin and Chad's guide service out. And there's probably 20 other companies that have guides as well.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've got calls in to most of the folks that were mentioned. I'm still debating in my head about going guided. I know I need to decide very soon before the good outfitters are booked up.

Go DIY!!
We ve hunted 12b several times and have killed some real nice ones DIY, go ahead of time to scout if that's an option and get acquainted with the unit, it's mostly a migration unit but you can get the general lay of the land and prey for early snow!
My mom and I went the Monday before the hunt about 10 years ago and she killed the 3rd biggest buck we had scouted opening am, he grossed 199 5/8"!
If it's dry I'd seriously consider shooting a 180"+ buck, we haven't done that and have come away empty handed (which I'm perfectly ok with, it's just a personal choice!)
Either way you decide to go good luck to you! You will see tons of deer and biggest challenge will be sorting through the solid bucks that make you question whether to shoot or pass!

7magman,

As for all of the outfitters having trail cams, I'm not so sure that is true. All of the outfitters mentioned have trail cams in 13A and 13B but 12B West Late is mainly a migration hunt. There are some big resident bucks but you should pray for early snow in southern Utah and on the Kaibab to get the deer moving. I hunted 12B West Late a few years ago and the weather was fairly warm with no snow and the migration just was not there yet. The outfitters mentioned so far in this post all have very good reputations. I'd be prepared to stay the entire season as any bad weather could mean more deer and new bucks showing up every day. Be prepared to see some other hunters and make sure you have some good binoculars and perhaps a spotting scope. That being said, you might get lucky and drive right up on a big one. Lots of places to stay in Kanab if you don't have camping equipment. Pretty slim pickings in Fredonia. Make sure that you stop in at Muley Crazy to check out the big ones.

Thanks for the references guys..I appreciate it.

You're right on about 12B late being a migration hunt. You are hunting 80% Utah deer with a very few resident and/or Kaibab bucks.

Haven't heard from this guy so guess he has already got hooked up.

I'm looking for one or maybe two late season hunters either in 12B or 12A West..

Don- I drew Az sheep tag this year. Haven't decided if I will go with outfitter.....
You are not by chance familiar with 46BE are you ?

DO it DIY!!
If you get a decent migration you will see a lot of deer coming out of Utah. Glass a lot. Its a huge area and room for everyone. There is no secret spot and the guides are waiting on the same migration just like you. Someone will comment on the hot-spot their guide friend knows about, but don't fork out several thousand dollars on that. The deer will be there and when you sit, glass and spot as many bucks as your guide does.. you may get real sick to your stomach about the small fortune you just lost forever. DIY for certain on this hunt.

I'll try to get some pictures up this week. I haven't been on MM over the holidays.

I did end up going guided and had a fun hunt. I got a buck that I was really happy with.
