LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-17 AT 02:41PM (MST)[p]I last elk bowhunted unit 1 back in 2002, and finally drew again. I know since then quotas went up and harvest declined for several years. Seems that has been stabilized the last couple years. Then there's the Wallow Fire. There were so many bulls in 2002 it was really not challenging. Heck by the end of that hunt I felt like if I flung an arrow up into the sky it would have a solid chance of hitting a bull. I'm expecting that zoo to be gone now which is no problem. I'm mostly curious if there was anyone here that experienced the hunt that long ago, and how the fire might have changed the hunting strategy today.

I will bring one climbing treestand as I found several active water holes back then and my wheels are falling off. Might need the break despite the terrain being as easy as it gets.

Anybody aware of any wifi hotspots down there? Or if not how the Verizon signal is? I can use my iPhone hotspot if signal is good enough.

I hunted that tag about four years ago and we just drove into town at lunch occasionally to grab a burger and check in. I think my partner had Verizon and was able to do some work with his phone while sitting at the Sonic there, AT&T was almost useless. May not be what it once was, but I'd love to have that tag in my pocket this fall, Good Luck.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-26-17 AT 11:34AM (MST)[p]I had service all over the unit. I think, it's been a few years.
BTW, 7 of 19 drew out of your point pool. congrats

I just checked with the outfitter I'm going with and he said that the Verizon service is very good down there, AT&T not good at all.

I hunted it in 2015 and got good reception about 8-10 miles out of Alpine, just before you get to the lake. Lake Blanca ? Lake Sierra ? Cant remember the name. Where rd 88 meets the highway.

I hunted it before the fire and it was incredible I would love to hunt it again but don't think i want to wait that long to draw again. With 9 NR points should draw a good unit soon.

>I'm sorry you saw so many
>elk & that it wasn't
>challenging. That must have been
>really difficult.

I don't think I could describe any other hunt I've been on anywhere in this manner. But it was true. I even had a 330 pushing 4 cows right into our camp while I was dressing my bull on the tailgate! Crazy. Met a lot of other archers who claimed they were not seeing much but hard to believe. The north facing slopes of every knob mentioned in the AZFG unit summaries held bulls.
