Hello all!
My father and I are non-residents with 7 points going into the 2018 draw, and have been putting in for unit 23 late rifle. I think we have a few more years before this unit becomes a real possibility for us to draw. I was wondering what your thoughts were about our plan, or if we should be looking into another unit/hunt. My goals are for my father to have a chance at a 340 type bull, as he is not getting any younger, and has only killed one big bull in his life. I would love for him to get a few more in the next 10 years. We have hunted unit 9 late in the past and it was TOUGH, seeing only 5 bulls in 9 days of hard hunting/scouting. Please let me know what you think. We aren't opposed to an early archery hunt, however these permits seem to be in the 15-20 point range usually for non-res guys.

Thanks

Hey TJ...he took one heck of a bull I'd say!

It was a pleasure creating this 2017 BADAZZ 16x24 SHOWSTOPPER PRINT for him!!!

Aloha!

Roland

You have a good chance at drawing unit 27 late rifle and close to Unit 1 late rifle. I'm sure some locals can give you better information but I'm told this year a 320-330 bull would be a good bull, for a physical hunt.

Good luck

There are 13 late rifle hunts you could draw in the Bonus Pass depending how guy's move around. You have zero chance of drawing 1, 23, or 27 in that Bonus Pass draw.

With 7 points, if you really want to make it happen this year, you would probably want to put in for any unit between 4 and 8. All of those "lesser" units hold quality bulls...you just have to put in the time and effort. Really just choose one and go for it.

I stand corrected. I was looking at the wrong information. Toprut will give the draw odds for Arizona's hunts.
Thanks Wapati for making me check myself.
Heywouldya

Thanks for the info guys, and for the pic of my dads print Roland. Sounds like we are a few more years out for 23 late. How many points do you think 23 is taking?

This year I would avoid 7W. It's going to get pounded before the late rifle. Always consider 6A for older hunters. Most elk of any unit and easy terrain. You almost certainly would draw that tag and have a great time. If you really want to kill a big bull hire a guide. There are big bulls in every unit but only a few guys know where to find them. Of those few, almost nobody can get a hunter in the right spot at the right time to kill one.
Believe me, I've been running trail cams the last couple years and when hunting season rolls around the huge bulls disappear.

With the recent changes to the AZ draw process, only half of the NR tags (5% of the total) go in the Bonus Pass. The other half (5%) go into the 1-2 pass and can be drawn by a res or non-res. So it is possible for a NR with 1 pt to draw a primo tag.

The tag increase in 7w is frustrating...I'm all for junior hunts but they should have pulled all those tags from General hunts and 550 bull tags is gonna be a total $hit show

Thank you for your tips guys. I will look into the options you have shared. I would really like my dad to tag some quality bulls before he is too old to hunt them. Maybe waiting for 23 would be our best option??? I know unit 9 late was pretty disappointing for all the hype unit 9 gets.

I personally would rather hunt now than wait another 5+ years. Maybe go for 6A like some of the others have said. You'll have a pretty good chance at a good bull. Then keep putting in for Unit 23 for your first choice and hope in the future you get lucky enough to draw that tag. And if not, after 5 more years or so, you'll be back in the bonus pass for quite a few units and you get to hunt again!
