That time of year

Well it's application time again and same old debate as always where to apply!I have never been a real serious elk guy but that being said I think I have a plan for what to do for elk and all the points I have been accumulating. So I was just curious for those of you Arizona experts and non experts what would you do with 21 nonresident points? Lots of strategies was thinking on using them this year as I don't have a ton of hunts planned elsewhere yet but after looking at it I think I am gonna wait a year or two more, I am in no hurry but would still be interested in hearing what others would do.

I'd consider waiting a year. We have been very dry.

Look at 23N or 1 early archery or early rifle/muzzy bull for both units.

The west side of the state is generally drier than the east side. We could get a bunch of spring rains and have a great year, but it has been bad for moisture this fall and winter. Its supposed to be 83 tuesday in the Phoenix area. I'm not too hopeful for next year until I see some heavy moisture.

The mule deer rut was not good this last month. I believe the drought is messing with the does cycles.

The only archery hunt you should consider with that many points is 23n or 23s. Do not use them on any other archery hunt but that especially if you're willing to wait. You won't ever be guaranteed to draw the 23 archery tag but if you do its one of the best hunts in the state. Other than that I would apply for the 23n or 23s rifle hunt. Once again not guaranteed since you're a nr but it's the best tag you can get. Other early rifle units to consider are unit 1, 9 and that's about it. I wouldn't do the 27 rifle hunt or the 3c rifle hunt if you're hoping for a 380+ quality has gone down in those units but there still is that small chance for a giant in there.

Well still haven't applied but one hunt I have heard could be really good and I may have the points to draw is the 7W early muzzy hunt, what do the guys that know this unit think is a reasonable expectation for this unit during this season?

I would take my 21 NR points and apply for 7W. With scouting and some luck a 360-380 bull is a very reasonable expectation. Like was previously mentioned, you will have first crack at them before the archers.

Good Luck & have some fun chasing screaming bulls.

In regard to 7W early muzzy, that would be an excellent choice. You would have a really great hunt!! And it's raining up there right now.
