LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-18 AT 11:27PM (MST)[p]A little while back I posted up a request for some Javelina information in unit 24b here http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCForumID33/3176.html

It just occurred to me it should of been for unit 34b so I'm posting here with the correct unit in the text.

My wife and I drew 34b rifle javelina tags. Never been there before and have never hunted javelina, so it will be a learn as we go affair. Not going to ask for areas to hunt as I doubt anyone would be willing to help in that aspect but I do have a Serious question.
Would you camp (wall tent) or would you rent a motel room and drive in every day. Being close to the border I'm a little apprehensive to leave a tent out, but haven't lived in Arizona for 30 years so don't know the current illegal alien situation in that area.

I lived in Arizona for 14 years & killed a number of javelina in different units. Go with the motel-- much safer than a tent, eat at a restaurant.
Look for "black rocks that move", look for cactus/prickly pear cactus, lots of them, get on high points & glass & glass & glass--- drive roads into little used areas by people, look carefully at " Rocky areas" & flats too--- all day long. They are very hard to see, believe me. Almost as bad as Coues Deer, the very worst to see I'm my opinion anyway. Mostly they will be in small to medium size groups. Ask the Game Warden/Wildlife Biologist for that area -- they are usually quite helpful. Get a good map first of that area & Mark it up with the info you get from them. Let your Eyes do the walking ! Watch the wind too-- always approach from Downwind of them, they can smell very good & disappear like smoke ! Good Hunting & Good Luck---Their eyesight is quite poor.

The topic of border unit security and safety is always an interesting one. Like a lot of So. AZ guys, I have hunted down South many many times over the years, and will continue to do so. This includes hunting with friends, my children, and solo.

My opinion is that the motel option is nice and comfortable, but if you like to camp I would do that. The coueswhitetail.com post is 14 years old. Funny to dig that old thing up, given that there have been tens of thousands of hunters chasing game in the border units since that post, with very little negative press. ;-) If you do dig through all of the opinions within the cw.com link though, you see a post form Scottyboy that sums it up.

Be aware of your surroundings and have fun!!

I've hunted in 34b a few times for deer. Never any issues with camp/trailer getting messed with. Friend hunts 36's, a seems like a lot more illegal activities over there. Benson isn't that far away if you want a motel though.

I've seen javelina in Las Cienegas National Conservation Area
fairly often. Spend time towards to foothill areas towards the east. Decent jeep trail access to areas to glass. Water is limiting, so keep that in mind.

Good luck!
