Fellow Sportsmen:

Thursday night, the AZGFD will be hosting a webinar on all of the Article 3 proposals, including trail camera use.

Go to their website and get the link. I will be on the road and unable to watch.

A good question to ask them is this: How is a scope that has a built in laser rangefinder and when you get the range, the computer inside generates the correct hold and all you do is squeeze the trigger "NOT AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE but a trail cam that takes a picture that you may not see for days or weeks, is considered an unfair advantage?

I will say this. I have 10 cameras and to my knowledge not one of them has ever jumped off a pole or tree and shot anything?

Hunters have no control on where and when an animals comes to a water. And yes, a lot of these waters were paid for with sportsman dollars, and as far as I know, there is no law that prevents a hunter from sitting close by to a water and watches what comes in.

To me this 1/4 mile set back is being done only to placate the antis, and keep them from trying to put it on the ballot.

And once the public finds out about those scopes that do everything but pull the trigger, watch and see what happens.

I agree with about 95% of what is being proposed, but the trail camera set back is not something I see as being justified.

If you read the suggested changes they are also making the "smart guns" you're talking about illegal too. The trail camera thing is all about fair chase. I believe its units like the strip, unit 9 and 23 that are completely covered in cameras that brought this about. When an animal cant get a drink or walk down a trail without getting a picture taken it's not hard to pattern them. Yeah guys still have to get out there and find the animal in that area but when you know he gets a drink at this tank at 330 and a drink at this tank the next day at 400 it makes it a lot easier to find them. Its been pretty clear that more big deer and elk have been killed since trail cameras have been used heavily. Some will say it's not trail cams causing the higher success but I'm sure it won't take long to see less big animals being killed in the coming years.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I am all for getting rid of trail cameras. Have no idea how we killed animals 50 years ago when I was young. The outfitters need to look in the mirror if they want to see who is responsible for this one.

Watched the meeting...kind of surprised that there were a total of three people in the audience (Yes, only 3). And one of those spoke in regards to the air powered crossbows. Sure thought there would be more people commenting on the trail camera proposal. Having said that, it did come across as more of a "done deal" already.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

This past December in 21 I found camera's on most waters. One for sure on the main road doing licence plates..There were two camera's That had AZGF
Sickers..were these ligit population monitoring? Or do guys add these stickers to keep their cameras safe?
I am not a fan of trail cams.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I have trail cameras and I love using them, but I am in 100% support of the changes the AZGFD is making.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I have trail cams and like to use them but I'm in favor of this change by the game and fish. When you're sitting tanks and they're checking cams while you're sitting the tank, it just gets old. I got tired of going to tanks and just seeing them covered in cams.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I checked one one time while someone was sitting a tank, but they had driven their truck 100 yards cross country and actually didn't see them until I was close to trail cam, but didn't feel bad since they were sitting in their truck after illegally driving off road...I can't imagine seeing that someone's legitamitally sitting a tank and still marching in to check a trail cam.
People just plain sick sometimes, I had 3 or 4 trail cams stolen last year and I think the shittiest thing about it is the fact that it's fellow hunters who are the ones doing it.
I truly enjoy checking my cams but it's to the point where I wish they would ban them completely if they are going to do it or just leave them alone.
The biggest problem concerning any ban is who is supposed to enforce it??? Our game wardens are already stretched thin enough and dealing with trail cam b s is going to be a huge waste of their time.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Get ready for the classified to get hammered with used trail cameras with everyone trying to get rid of them before they Are worth nothing.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Hello Tomichi,
Like you, I am not a big fan of trail cameras. I have used tree stands occasionally in the past. I do not bother other peoples property and I expect the same in return. That includes trail cameras.
However, if I found a camera with an AZGF sticker on it, I would remove, and/or destroy it.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Why would you destroy G&F cameras?

My opinion of the Tank with the AZGF stickers is they are counting elk.
The one on the road? I know the USFS has camera's on closed roads up here in Colorado. I checked my map and the road with a camera is open and numbered...wonder if some one wants to know if their x buddy is going to their honey hole...it was a good spot...

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I should have said: "If the AZGF Commission rules to ban trail cameras, I would remove and/or destroy any camera I find with a AZGF sticker on it, especially if it is located on a road to record license numbers of passing vehicles".
Why?
Ask them about property left on public land (trail cameras, treestands, etc.) that has been stolen, and they will tell you they have no jurisdiction. And then they will quote the forest service policy: "Any property left on public land for 48 hours is considered abandoned".
Fair enough!

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

if the G&F has a camera out you can bet they have permission from the USFS for it. I know in 5bs they have wildlife biologists studying the turkey populations. Go ahead and take them and let us know how that works out for you.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Hello gleninaz!
The simple truth is that I really don't care much one way or the other who has trail cameras out there and where, or why, they are there. What pisses me off is that the G & F is about to ban the use of something they use all the time, and will continue to use after the ban.
To me, this is just one more example of their condencending, "we make the rules and will enforce them as we see fit" attitude. They even enforce rules that don't exist! I have spent many, many years supporting & defending the AZGF, in spite of their arrogance.
No more.
Due to my age and health, I don't get out near as much as I used to. But I will be on the lookout for trail cameras with G & F (and USFS) stickers on them. And no, I won't announce it!

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I will be 69 on my archery bull hunt this fall so I get it you cranky old bastard. :)

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Hello Glen,
Well, if you have lived & hunted in AZ as long as I have (1st deer tag was in 1968 @ 14 yrs old), you can appreciate my frustration at how much things have changed. And if you have had much interaction with the G & F, then you have probably encountered the same attitude.
Oh, and for the record, I may be cranky, and I may be a bastard, but at 64, I am not old!
Good luck on your hunt!

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Thanks. Yes things have changed and no I don't like it. I waited 7 years for this tag and that used to be an every year thing. You ain't young so get out there and keep those joints moving. Good luck in your hunts.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I personally am against the use of trail cameras on Public land. I think the Arizona Game & Fish should put cameras on the water holes and then charge a fee to those outfitters and hunters that want to view them. This would eliminate outfitters and others from needing to purchase hundreds of trail cameras simply to keep up with the other outfitters. Would probably be a good revenue source for the game and Fish; I'm sure hundreds of folks would be willing to pay several hundred dollars each to view the pictures. It would also be cheaper than buying dozens of trail cameras and checking on them periodically. Just my 2 cents that I know I will get criticized greatly for.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-18 AT 11:10AM (MST)[p]No way that would ever work. Among other reasons a big problem would be first guy to check them would just erase anything good. People would still take cams and most of all noone is going to agree with giving up their cams just so azgfd can charge people to see pictures on their cams instead.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

Bone collector,

So you think the game and Fish employee that checks the camera would erase all the good pictures? I have had outfitters tell me that it takes them an entire week of travel in rough terrain to check all of their cameras. Wouldn?t this save them a bunch of money? With there being so many cameras at each water source, I think the days are over of someone having a pickoff a buck that nobody else has ever seen.

So I guess the only other option for the outfitters (once the new policy takes effect) will be to place a camera on each trail heading for the water source but to make sure that you stay 1/4 mile away from the water. This will most likely increase the number of cameras in the vicinity of each water source. Seems counterintuitive to the intent of the new regulation/policy.

During the podcast the G&F leader was asked if they could set cameras up a foot past the 1/4 mile mark. He said if you did that and used the photos to take an animal you would be in violation. I think we are better off to wait and see if it is approved and what it actually says. I have a few cameras that could be for sale soon.

I might have missed that...but I thought they said just the opposite. As long as you were outside the 1/4 mile mark, you could do as you please. In fact the one guy brought up a concern that there would now be a ring of salt 1/4 mile around all of the water holes.

RE: G&F to host webinar Thursday evening on Article 3 subjects, including trail cameras

I may not have heard him right. I thought he said no problem if the camera was outside of the limit but they were not to be used to take any game. We will all know soon.
