Archery Deer Question

I'm planning on heading to AZ for the OTC archery next January, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for strategies to best put myself in a situation to kill a buck. I've never archery hunted mule deer or hunted Coues deer at all. Or even hunted in AZ. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I believe Coues is all draw. OTC is wide open except for the Kiabab.Have seen some MONSTER Mulies in the desert, but water is scarce.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-18 AT 03:52PM (MST)[p]Thanks. I've narrowed it down to 2-3 units I think. All of them say any antlered deer vs any antlered mule deer though. I was just more looking for glassing strategies, stalking strategies, things like that. And maybe anything that would be different about mule deer in Arizona vs up north.

Yes...if you are archery hunting OTC unit it is "Any Anterled Buck". Most hunters during this hunt get high and glass with quality optics then plan stalk.

My advice would be to contact a guide. There are many who would help for even a small fee. The best strategy for success will be sitting at a water hole. Finding the right spot is going to take some serious scouting or incredible luck. It's a very challenging hunt.

So I'm not going to have time to go down and scout before the hunt just because of driving distance and work constraints, but I would rather do it all as a DIY, and if I'm unsuccessful then I'll just chalk it up as a practice run for the following December. Is it pretty common to see a tank on google earth then show up in person and have it be dry?

It's all too common for tanks to be dry.Last Jan. "ranchers" were trucking in water and food to keep thier cattle alive.I hunted an area with 2 springs and 1 tank, all bone dry.If maps show windmills there may be water in the tanks.Good Luck..dirtclod Az.

Some tanks are just better than others. If you find a good tank multiple bucks will be using it. Honestly, there could be ten bad tanks for every good one. That's just a guess but you get the idea. A solid piece of advice is to be in Arizona the first week in January. The bucks will be chasing does like nuts.

As of last weekend my favorite tanks are shockingly low around Williams. Hopefully, we'll get rain yet this spring. If you pick a unit and ask about specific tanks before your hunt you should receive feedback. Good luck!!
