Hey guys, new to forum, never hunted in AZ either, but I drew the 2nd period muzzy hunt for 3B, November 30th to December 6th. I have read everything anyone has posted as well as the AZGFD's info on the area. I suspect that this will be a tough hunt, but if anyone can comment on general strategy for this type of hunt. My experience is hunting migratory Colorado elk, and this seems like it will be different. I'd be happy to trade any info I have for Wyoming deer and antelope or Colorado deer, elk, or antelope for your kindness.

Thanks in advance!

Andy

Hey Andy, my buddy and I hunted Arizona late muzzle loader elk last November in a different unit. We both killed bulls by sitting water holes in late afternoon. Most Arizona?s units are dotted with water tanks (dirt) so if it's dry like it was for us last season then get to a high vantage point and glass glass and glass and you should be able to see which tanks are being used by the elk. The cows and young bulls will come in first and run around and act crazy splashing in the water, small bulls will spar with each other then when they feel comfortable they'll start drinking then just before last shooting light the big boys will start coming in to water. It worked for us so I don't see why it wouldn't for you. Just something to try if things aren't working out for you i.e. spot and stalk, still hunting etc. Hope this helps and good luck. Eddie

PM me when you get closer to your hunt......I'll be living in the unit starting next month and can give you some updated info.

I hunt d that unit back when it was a rifle hunt. There are several good glassing points out in the PJ?s north of Pinetop. Glass, glass, glass. For us we always saw the hunt quality drop off drastically after the first day.

Might be a good idea to put some trailcams on some tanks in the pines. It's often still quite warm that time of year and the elk will use that shelter until they can't anymore. So if you can pattern a bull using a water source in the trees it could be productive.

With the way this year is shaping up, water is going to be key.

It's a split muzzy season now, and I have the 2nd season tag. I am going to get down there before the first season to scout roads, and 2 days early for the hunt. I'm hoping with enough scouting right before the season I can turn one up for opening day.
