I drew a November coues deer tag and just wondering if anyone could give me some information on areas to hunt and how this hunt has been in the past

azido-great info!I have seen many Javelina and some huge mule deer in 23,and a few Whitetail.Haven't seen any Coues Deer.Doesn't mean they aren't there...Lived and hunted here all my life and never have seen a Mountain lion.I know they are there watching me,I see their sign everywhere.dirtclod Az.

That makes zero sense...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-18 AT 05:59PM (MST)[p]A whitetail deer and a coues are two different types of "whitetail".Both body size, antler size and genetics.Tikka I believe you've hunted both before haven't you I see your posts here all the time.Or have I been led to believe incorrectly?Could be,I've been led astray before.dirtclod Az.

DIRTCLOD, I guess then maybe I'm confused... I never new Arizona had anything other than ?Coues whitetail? and mule deer...yes I've hunted Coues in AZ.
DIRT have you killed the ?normal whitetail? in AZ.?

Yes I have it was in unit 21 in the 80s.Looked it up and found that Whitetail are genus Odocoileus and Coues are a subspecies "Odocileus Couesi"same genus different subspecies.
Back east they have another subspecies "Odocileus virginianus"Body sizes seem to be the only real difference,I've noticed Mule Deer have a totally different"gamier" taste than Whitetails.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-18 AT 09:22PM (MST)[p]I believe, based on what the lead deer biologist for the state told me, there are only Coues Whitetail documented in Arizona. Not saying it couldn't happen, just they've never been documented here. I believe that's what Tikka is referring to?

Correct.

>Wrong answer.I researched it.

Kind of like the camera issue being a "done deal" and the "entire" forest closed during restrictions? :) Just razzing ya!

Sorry bear for high jacking your thread... I wished I had any information I could share but I've never stepped foot in the unit...

I can't comment on unit 23 other than I've heard it is a good unit.

If you've not hunted Coues before a couple of things you should consider:

* You need to glass A LOT. These are small animals that blend very well with their environment and they like to be in cover.
* Put your binos on a tripod and take something comfortable to sit on so you can look for hours at a time
* If you have access to higher magnification binos take them - I found it pretty tough to spot Coues with my 10x binos beyond 400 yards
* Don't get too discouraged not seeing many animals, they are likely there and just require some patience
* Go and enjoy the warmer weather AZ offers and have a good time
