AZ Unit 9 Late Rifle

Imagine my excitement after receiving a phone call that I was first in line for a surrendered bull elk tag! I can't wait to get out there regardless of the long odds, weather...or you name it. A day/week of hunting with family and friends is pretty much as good of a day/week as it gets.

So, I've done some research on unit 9 earlier this year and have been researching it intensely the last couple days after accepting this late season tag. I'm reaching out to my fellow outdoorsmen here in hopes that someone would be willing to point me in any direction to make this trip even better and increase my odds of success. I'm happy to exchange info on other States that I'm familiar with (NM, NV, WY, UT).

Thanks in advance and good luck filling any remaining tags!

Unit 9 is flat which makes it tough to glass. Find an area with multiple water sources in relative close proximity to eachother. Hunt the area with the wind in your favor. You should be able to slip in and learn the patterns of the elk. They should be plenty calm to give you a shot when you bump them. Remember the wind because if they catch your scent game over.

That's a tough hunt when the elk aren't talking....flat and thick.
A buddy drew 9 late rifle a few years back and hunted with one of the top outfitters and struck out.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-18 AT 01:30PM (MST)[p]Agree with those above. My brother in law had the late cow hunt last year, which is the week after the bull hunt I think. Was cold and dry as hell. The ground was like powder it was so dry.

I'd find trails to water tanks, and get to them early, as people fill up quick. Look for broken ice to see what is active (was 2 degrees at night).

There are a few places to glass down low where we hunted, which was in the NE corner of the unit where the 64 turns north. Also heard there were a few good glassing points (knobs in the plains really) on the west side of the unit, but never got a chance to try there.

Saw a few bulls at first light where we were one morning, but no cows and lots of traffic at the water holes. Lots of deer too.

Would be a fun unit to hunt during the rut, but tough for the late when they aren't moving much and few glassing areas/flat.

Good luck

Thank you all! I appreciate all the insights, tips and advice. I'm looking forward to working hard to make it happen.

I was able to fill the freezer with this old bull, at least the teeth look pretty worn down to me. We only saw two good bulls while scouting. We hunted HARD and didn't see anything but tracks until we turned up this guy the evening before the last day. He's fairly heavy and wide, with regressing, wilted tops. He didn't have much fat at all on him, but I'm grateful to have my freezer full. Even though it was much harder than expected, very cold, and tiring to not see anything day after day, we kept it positive, worked hard, and had a great time. I couldn't be happier to punch my tag on an old warrior like this. Thanks again to those who provided tips and assistance!

Congratulations. Thank you for letting us know the results of your hunt. Would you apply again for Unit 9 or try a different unit?

Man, that's hard to say. It was tough for sure along with a lot of other hunters! It was my second choice. I'd probably look elsewhere next time.
