Unit 50 help please!

I am looking for advice about mobility friendly areas in Unit 50. I know, I know.....

My husband & I are both DIY hunters. This is not our first hunt (Not even our first unit 50 hunt). But we have new circumstances. Hubby recently had a stroke & has mobility issues. He can walk but has a significant limp due to a lame-ish leg. Plus his balance is shot now. Our usual spot is going to be a buggar since lots of hiking is a no-go. He does have a mobility impaired designation for NM.

Hubby is determined to go this year despite the challenges. I'm on board but need a point in the right direction. Anyone willing to pity me with some advice?

Oh, we hunt the 2nd & 3rd weeks of Oct this year.

It is a very tough unit and requires a lot of scouting. From what I have heard it seems there is more elk in the area. I have heard of two bulls this year but they were on Pot mountain and no roads there. I have hunted with a friend by the flashing elk sign just before TP, just as the sun is coming up. Also a area to look at is wind mountain (old mine) they cross from 52 once they get pressure.

Yes, check out the forested area east of Highway 285, just north of the flashing lights. It's the northern snippet of Carson National Forest, off of Forest Road 551. I scouted and hunted there several years ago due to a medical condition that required me to stay near 285 in case of an emergency. At the time (July-early Sept.), there was a small herd of cows and spikes in that area, plus at least two bulls that regularly crossed into it from unit 51 on the other side of the highway. There is a small spring in there, along with at least two ponds/tanks. I hiked in from 285, but on Google Earth you can see all the roads in that area and decide whether it's do-able for your situation. A lot of people dismiss it because it's right off the highway, but it might be worth a look. If you're interested, I can check my GPS to see if I marked where the spring is relative to roads. Good luck!

Thank you both! In the past we were twice successful at Pot Mountain. There's no way hubby can do that one now.

I've seen the elk crossing 285 in the past, and know they move through 50, 51 and 52 depending on weather and hunt activity. I like the idea of looking through there.

ABQ Chica, if you can find the coordinates I'd be indebted! I'll pull up Google Earth and start looking along 285, and see what I can find for Wind Mountain too.

Either of you going out this season?

Unfortunately, it turns out I hunted there before I owned a GPS, and can't find the paper maps I marked up. Sorry! It's definitely a decent area, though.

Another place to check out is the area between Vibora Mesa and 285, just northeast of Ojo Caliente where 285 starts to run east-west for awhile. I didn't hunt there, but several other hunters took bulls as they crossed into Unit 50 from the north side of 285.

Good luck!
