super moon

Got a 2nd rifle deer hunt next week and the moon will be the biggest supermoon in 70 years. Gonna be a tough hunt for sure.

I no longer buy into the whole moon phase thing anymore. My elk hunt this year was during a full moon. I've never seen so many elk! They were roaming into the late morning and early afternoon. I saw several hitting water holes in the early evening with about 3 hours of daylight. The moon phase will never ever influence my hunt choices again

You're absolutely right

I find it helps decide fishing times and lets me hike into places & watch the critters without breaking my neck....

....and the moon will be the same size & place as always, but may appear larger as it rises. Last two have been huge too.

I too thought that all these moon phases were a bunch of BS and for the most part the moon does not affect critter movement UNLESS you are hunting an area with high amounts of hunting pressure. Then that's when all these moon phases for hunting lives up to all its hype. Same thing goes with the really wise/mature bucks and bulls... they do follow moon patterns while most other younger animals don't as much.

Add high 60's blue bird clear skies and you see very few critters moving.
Beautiful moon for hiking in & out with.
But the deer hunting sucked as much as the so-called hunters in 23 this year. Saw 2 shootable bucks in doable distance in 5 days. One a dink and the 4x that was sent hightailing it to next unit by the illegal offroad atv aholes that came up the canyon with him 150 yrds away behind a alligator juniper below me...2 hrs into hunt.
I used the moon to hike an hour in there away from roads & atvs/trucks.

Hank,

I think the moon and warm weather probably had some affect on the deer hunting but unit 23 is hammered so hard (too many tags) from Sept. 1 to January 15, that the wildlife, especially deer, don't stand much of a chance. I sometimes wonder if the Game Dept. uses false reporting results to justify their huge amount of tags let for the deer hunts. From most of the hunters I talk to I don't see the success rates anywhere near what the Game Dept. statistics show. I've thought about a FOIA request to view the reporting results. Maybe I am just paranoid but things just don't add up.

We are fixing to hunt 23 for Coues Saturday and even with 100 tags I know it is going to be a cluster. I guess competition is good but the poor deer sure catch hell, and hunter satisfaction sucks. Opportunity is a great thing but only up to a point. The Game Dept. uses the old "opportunity" argument when they set the seasons and tag allocations.

Fellas I just got back from the 23 mule deer hunt. My brother and I back packed in 3 miles in some nasty high country. Saw 33 deer. 17 bighorn sheep. 2 mountain lions. 5 tiny bucks that I wasn't about to shoot. We did see actually more Coues bucks than Muley bucks with one nice 8 point. It was a ##### climbing those nasty ass bolder peaks at 5 am but we got away from the hunters. What was sad was coming down out of there the ATV a holes were climbing anywhere they could drive an Atv. We took a drive on Monday along Alma flats and I swear we had driven into a new city as many campers and trailers were in there. And this was the second hunt. After archery. After muzzleloader. Jeez. No shooter bucks left. Sad shiznit.

We did see a freaking monster bull elk on the side of a cliff acting like he was a bighorn sheep. No elk hunter would ever find that sumbitch I guarantee it. Lol

Well now it's time to go call coyotes after another crappy deer hunt. Peace and Happiness yall over the holidays.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-16 AT 02:18PM (MST)[p]I hear ya Stoney & Beast.
Good luck on your hunts Stoney. I'm thinking of coues in there someday as I see so many and I could pack one out OK.
After my heart attack last year I know I can no longer go and do what I used to. Sucks getting old when you were once very active and no hell hole would stop you. I saw some good bucks in spots I might have hesitated in old days before going, but no way now.
The atv clowns were worse than ever and every other truck was in a Nascar race or had no problem making noise.I reported the two clowns that blew my opening morn to G&F,maybe Casey can find them
Your very right about the too many tags too Stoney.
I too have been stonewalled for info by G&F data. Does not add up to me either.
I do know where I saw lots of deer & bucks and gets very little pressure ever it seems.....next year.

Geeze....sounds like there won't be camper space for my brother and I this weekend. Hopefully some folks will clear out. I'm looking forward to hanging out with him again and possibly finding a few coues deer:) Apparently finding deer is a far fetched idea. Good luck to all headed out!
