Elk Units For Youth Hunters

LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-16 AT 01:59PM (MST)[p]Would like to start a discussion on elk units (bull) for youth hunters, low, medium and high quality trophy units - easier to draw to more difficult to obtain tags.

My son will be 12 this March and just passed his hunter safety this year. He has never shot a muzzleloader but maybe he should see if Santa has one or two extras? He's not a big framed kid, fairly skinny like his dad was.

I know there are some rifle and muzzle, youth tags. My son is not able to pull back nor do I want him hunting an elk with a bow at this age.

We would be coming from out of State with not a lot of scouting time. Another consideration is we would want this a fairly moderate to easy hunt as he is only going to be 12 and an extreme hunt would not be good for his hunting spirit/morale at this age.

I have hunted unit 13 archery and that unit does come to mind.

Cant get much better than 34. Sure there are some good Gila units as well.

Unit 34 has an either sex youth hunt that is hard to beat. I put my daughter in for this hunt every year since she was ten years old. Finally she drew it last year and then she drew it again this year. Both years we could only hunt the first two days of the hunt. My daughter cannot afford to take time out of her school schedule. Last year she got a real nice 6x6 bull on the second morning. This year we got into elk both days and had some close calls. A couple times she almost got a shot but it just didn't work out. Two days wasn?t enough time this year. I think this is a great hunt for the youth.

Thanks forgot about 34... When do they post the draw odds for the 2016 year for consideration in 2017?

Hunted 34 with my nephew. Definitely exceeded our expectations. NM Paul was awesome and without his help I don't believe we would have been successful??

Thanks Paul, your nephew killed a toad and I think you guys would have done pretty good no matter what.

I would not recommend 17 for a youth hunter.
