7mm-08 vs .270

270 short mag is the ticket. Best round I've ever shot. I have killed Oryx, deer, and my wife dropped the hammer down all with one shot on a 365 ish bull. All with the Nosler 140 gr Accubonds. Hey bro I still need to talk with you. I've been so darn busy mounting a mountain lion trying to get it done by Christmas.
Regards, Geno

Agree %100 on the 270 wsm. It's too much rifle for my wife though , call me, you have my number.

All other things being equal, the .270 packs the harder punch at longer ranges. If you use a 140 grain bullet, the .270 has a muzzle velocity of 2,975 fps compared to the 7mm-08's 2,825 fps. If you use 1,500 ft*lb as the minimum energy that you want to put down an elk, then the .270 maxes out at 365 yards (2,197 fps), while the 7mm-08 maxes out at 300 yards (2,197 fps).

Mosey, that is amazing info and that's what I went with ?

I shoot the 150 gr. Trophy copper it's a bit much . The reg .270 I have is significantly easier to handle . Maybe a brand issue? I'm even gonna put a muZle break on it for her so she should be really comfy..

Perfect. High score gunsmith on central and Eubank area did a hell of a job on my 300 ultra . Muzzle brake and trigger job. Shoots smooth as butter now instead of that 50lb factory trigger that came lol.

Im not sure why recoil is such an issue. My niece shoots a Browning 300win mag,180 grain nozzler for elk and has used that gun since she was 10 and weighed 80 pounds. It does have a factory installed muzzle break which does make a difference but the key is she usually only fires 1 round out of it per year and has never missed (4-4 on cow elk). The key is we have the same scope she uses on her 300 mounted on a 22 that she shoots a few hundred rounds out of per year. Of course my brother shoots the 300 to insure its grouping tight and this would be my recommendation, shoot a gun like a 22 untill you can squeeze the trigger without dodging the recoil. At the moment of truth shooting at game the shot will be automatic and the recoil will probably not be felt.

One tough girl there buddy, but excellent advice thank you very much.

A .270 is not a long range cartridge. .25's and .27's have very poor ballistic coefficient's. The 7mm bullet is a much better bullet so I prefer the 7mm-08, that being said, for long range hunting with a lower recoil, I like, .260 remington, 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5x284, .280 Ackley. With a little more kick, I like, 7mm rem mag, 7 SAUM, and 300 WSM.

The 270 win is a 'hunting' round. Although several bullet brands are offering higher bc bullets....170 gr berger, 150 gr lrab, 150 grain berger, 145 gr eldx, even the 150 grain sst has a .525 bc which isn't too bad as far as a hunting round goes. If she's looking at shooting 600-1000 yards consistently then there are much better choices than either the 270 win. or 7mm-08. In 'standard' hunting loads out of your 'average' hunting rifle at 'normal' hunting ranges the 270 is going to edge out the 7mm-08. In reality the 270 win is capable of killing game effectively at ranges much further than 95% of hunters should be shooting anyways. Get a 270 and happy hunting!

i shoot a 270 wsm most of the time. if my book is right according to bob forker the 140 grn accubond in a 270 short mag is 3200 fps and 3185 ft pounds at the muzzle at 500 yards its 2296 fps and 1689 foot pounds using federal amo. I have several books and none of them say the same

She'll never , EVER be shooting that far . We went .270

.270 it is . Hope she gets to use it this year.

.270 we got . The wsm is to much for her needed something smaller than that but bigger than the .243 family.
