NM Hunting Guide, Client Wounded on Mexico border.

Hunting Guide, Client Wounded on Mexico border.

For release: 1/8/2017

While guiding an aoudad hunt in Presidio county Texas, a New Mexico hunting guide was shot in the abdomen and seriously wounded Friday night after what appears to have been an attempt to kidnap his clients on the Mexico border.

The guide remains in critical condition in a Texas Hospital. His client was also shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Multiple assailants fired upon an RV parked near a hunting lodge where the party was staying for the hunt. The contracted hunter and his wife were asleep in the in the RV when the attack began.

Walker Daugherty, 26, of Chloride, NM was wounded while attempting to stop the assailants from taking the RV with his clients inside. He was assisted by another guide, Michael Bryant; the men were staying inside the lodge with their wives.

Per a family source, everyone was in bed preparing for an early hunt, the guides and cooks inside the house and the clients in the rental RV parked nearby. Walker heard voices outside and went to see what the noises were, he witnessed men with guns attempting to take the RV, he then ran back inside to get help. Walker and Michael armed themselves to defend and protect the client and to attempt to deter the assailants while the hunter attempted to escape in the RV which was being shot at repeatedly. The vehicle is riddled with bullet holes from the attack and suffered other structural damage.

The attack lasted long enough for Walker to run back to the house and get more ammunition, when he was close to the door his sister, saw him get shot and was able to drag him inside the house and away from the gunfire. The women in the lodge were able to get a spotty cell signal and call 911.

The family has been earning a living guiding and outfitting out of the remote ranch for years. The business had experienced several thefts and had been working with the US Border Patrol to apprehend illegal aliens in the area in the past month. The theft events and the attack occurred in the United States.

The attack has the family concerned that the attack was not just an attempt to rob the property. They believe the assailants intended to kill all the party. The attackers were strategically placed around the lodge and the men were fired upon from different areas.

The client's wife, a nurse, was able to help keep Walker from bleeding to death while they waited several hours for a medivac helicopter to take him to El Paso. It took local law enforcement over an hour to get to the remote scene. The family says the men and their wives were grilled about the veracity of their account by Law Enforcement and the assailants got away and likely returned to Mexico. Kidnapping, along with drug and human trafficking, has become common along the Mexico border especially if there are reasons to believe that an intended victim is a person of means. The family, however, are self-employed outfitters earning a living as guides although the clients were likely the intended targets.

Friends have set up a go fund me account to assist with medical expenses and the long recovery process that Walker is expected to endure. He is uninsured. https://www.gofundme.com/help-for-walker-daugherty

Our country needs to step up security! Local law enforcement can do only so much , but a military presence will damned sure get attention and make those sorry mexicans think twice about coming over the border so freely without worry....ENOUGH , Trump takes office on the 20th and I hope his administration addresses this type of problems....

It is time we take back our borders and our land of these illegals.. It is time we build that wall and every American sees the wars happening on our borders every day and pick up a gun and join the fight against illegals and have a kill permit on all heads coming over. There is a right way to come to the United States and it works for thousands that become a good US citizen. I am not against mexicans, or any other eithnicty or race its just about being safe in our country and home and land. I am Against drug running, human smuggling and the trashing our country with trash they bring across.

I see humanity now as one vast plant, needing for its
highest fulfillment only love, the natural blessings of the
great outdoors, and intelligent crossing and selection.

well said....Those drug runners are not crossing the border for a better life, this attack was of nothing more than an evil intent...

Heres a newer update from the family.

Official Family Statement - For Immediate Release 1/16/17

Written by Bob and Jennafer Daugherty

We, the family of Walker Daugherty, have decided to release a statement regarding our version of the events that took place on a rural TX ranch along the Mexico border on January 6, 2017. Our statement comes after the Presidio County Sheriff, Danny Dominguez issued what he described as his office?s conclusion to their investigation of the incident. In an interview with reporters, Sheriff Dominguez declared that there was no cross-border activity and the incident ?was the result of friendly fire?. We have chosen to release our account of events leading up to the incident to clear up, what we feel is, a lot of misinformation being reported.

Sheriff Dominguez?s statement that there has been ?no indication of cross border activity? on the ranch is inaccurate. We have been involved in numerous incidents of cross border activity on the Circle Dug Ranch. Since December, we have been involved in 2 helicopter captures of illegal immigrants on the ranch. The first involved a group of illegals immigrants we spotted and kept track of until Border Patrol arrived to apprehend them. The 2nd capture was the result of a break-in at our camp while we were out hunting. The day after the robbery we located a group of illegals through our spotting scopes and called Border Patrol, who again apprehended the immigrants. They turned out to be the same group who robbed our camp and we were able to recover some of our stolen property. Border Patrol agents told us that one of the robbers was also a convicted felon who had recently been released from a prison in KS, MO. This was his fourth capture.

On another recent, yet separate, occasion two men from El Salvador came into our hunting camp and we provided them with food and water until Border Patrol arrived. On yet another occasion we witnessed an individual breaking into a neighboring ranch house. We reported the incident to Border Patrol who apprehended the individual. We also routinely see foot tracks and other evidence of uninvited individuals on the ranch. Border Patrol has told us that everyone in the area should be armed at all times and to never travel alone.

It is our opinion that the incident that took place on January 6th was a failed robbery attempt of our hunter client's RV. Our son Walker and our other guide, Michael, were responding to what they perceived to be an immediate threat to the lives of our hunter and his wife. Walker was awakened, in his room in the ranch house, by an ongoing commotion at the RV. He then awoke Michael as back up. Shots were fired and the hunter and Walker were both wounded.

We do not deny that our hunter client was hit by a bullet that resulted from a horribly fearful and confusing situation. However, the bullet that shot our son was not. That shot came later and from an entirely different direction. We are unable to reveal all the details of the event at this time but we do not agree with the Sherriff?s stated conclusion to the incident. We have 40 years? experience guiding hunters. We know our surroundings, our firearms, and our occupation. We have also assisted state game agencies in the apprehension of poaching cases and I am a former reserve conservation officer for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. This incident was not the result of miscommunication or reckless gun handling.

We are happy to report that our son Walker, who was shot in the chest, is in stable condition and continues to improve. We would like to thank all those who have been praying for our family and have supported us through this crisis. There is no way we can express our feelings of gratitude to everyone personally but we know who you are and you will never ever be forgotten. To all our friends both known and unknown THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!!
