Off range oryx

What do you guys think a nonresidents odds of success are on an off range DIY oryx hunt? I know there are a lot of variables but just wondering if it's doable or if a guy should plan on a guide?

Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks.

It doesn't matter much whether you're a resident or nonresident, off-range can be tough. I don't think it's uncommon to go days in the field without seeing anything on the shoot-able side of the fences. So the question is, how much time in the month that you draw can you give to the hunt? If you have less than a week, I think your odds of success would be pretty low. If you have more than a week, say up to two weeks, I think your odds would greatly improve, but you can't afford to be too picky. In my opinion, any off-range oryx is a very respectable trophy.

Thanks Mozey. Realistically I could probably only give it 4 days. I have contacted a couple outfitters one of which has private land and the other hunts off range public and says he's had 100% success on 3 day hunts which I'm a little sceptical of.
I really like DIY better but with the steep price of the non res. License maybe an outfitter would be the way to go.

That depends. If you're saying it's cheaper than flying to Africa for just an oryx, then I would agree. However, if you are planning a safari, an trophy fees for an oryx in Africa will be cheaper than the cost of the NR tag here in NM. I guess it depended on the price of an outfitter here.

Doenob...I haven't been able to get a response from the outfitters on the armendaris ranch. Would be a good way to bypass the draw system but I would imagine that may come with a steep price. One outfitter I talked to has private land tags but I'm just not sure that is the route I want to go.

It MIGHT be a little cheaper to do a private land hunt, as a Non-res.....

I've been very fortunate to have taken a nice bull, off-range, quite a few years ago, as well as take 3 in Namibia... NO comparison between the 2 hunts, I would take a 7 day hunt in Namibia, or NW South Africa all day long, for about the same $$.

Best tasting critter on 4 legs though!!

The deal is I'm usually in las cruces a week or two a year visiting family.
Anybody have any leads on a private land hunt?

I just paid over 2k for my tickets to SA. Flying down in July and flying American/South African, direct from Atlanta to avoid to many luggage swaps. Def not cheap to fly down though I supposed it could be done cheaper. I just didn't take any chances.

>Airfare to South Africa has come
>down in price.
