I noticed that on the last harvest report that GMU 39 had a considerable increase in Archery deer success in comparison to the previous years. In fact the first rifle hunt was the only bad harvest that unit had. Is this just a fluke or is it possible that 39 has had a huge turn around?
I have always been interested in that unit due to how close it was to ABQ which makes scouting easier. What do you guys think?

That would be awesome. I know that area can grow some big deer if it rains and they don't get poached.

Not much of a turn around. A lot of the people that are harvesting are drawing a tag and have started to hunt private land. Very little public and that still gets pounded with not great success.

The harvest report shows the difference between private and public harvest. Between 2 rifle hunts an archery hunt, and a muzzy hunt only 1 public hunt had a harvest that was less than 20%.
That is an improvement from before.

I am pretty sure the harvest report is by license type not where you got it. Did you get it in the public draw or private owner. I can draw a public tag and go hunt a private ranch and it will still be listed under the public even though I harvested it on private land. I know a good amount that have ended up in this situation in 39. I am not positive that is how it would be report but that is how I understand it.

live4muleys is correct: Public/Private simply identifies the type of tag one drew/purchased. If you draw a public, then arrange to hunt on and kill on private, the results will indicate that in the public column of information.

Yea I figured that after I posted my reply. I do still have a lingering thought in my head that if other people are able to get permission from private land owners than I can TRY to do the same. This would definitely be a third choice hunt, but I do think there is potential if I work hard, scout hard, and try to get access to some areas. Either way it beats the hell out of watching some Primos hunting show from my living room wishing I had a tag. Thank you guys for the input! Your feedback made it clear on what I need to do if I end up with the tag.
