if road kills and deadheads found are property of the state where do they end up in new mexico

Auction at the NM game and fish expo. Otherwise know as the Bob Gerding show. I seen them have elk and sheep horns but not deer. Maybe they have a pile of bone somewhere in a storage locker.

If you find a dead head, leave it lay in the woods and take some pictures. Then you can go and get permission from the local warden who will usually let you go back and pick it up. You then have to bring it back to the warden and they will let you purchase it from the state and give you a receipt saying that it was bought from the state and for how much. I have done this with several dead heads and the fee is usually not very much, $20-$50 dollars.

^ That's not the case all time. Found a huge deadhead in '15 that the G&F did not let me keep. About a 190" typical 4x4 muley. It was a mountain lion kill and fairly fresh too! They do not let you keep the big ones from what I have heard and from my own personal experience but the smaller ones... you can definitely buy from them for a low price as mentioned above.

If they're big, they usually keep them or charge high fees. I know of fees in excess of $350, although personal experience was slightly less than $200. In my opinion, they shouldn't be able to charge more than the tag fee for that particular animal, but that's another conversation. My issue is they never let me bring them from the field without a warden present, but the wardens never have time to meet in the middle of the Gila and won't climb the floridas and venture into some of the distant places I go to so it's a catch 22. Hell...half the places don't even have cell coverage, but they won't take coordinates and pictures as evidence. So...I've left several to sun rot. Sucks. They make fun restoration projects and garage or yard art.
