I was able to find a Land owner Tag for this coming weekend for Unit 51 West of Highway 84. I know the area really good but have not been in there in a couple months. We only have the weekend to make it happen so I am asking if anyone has information as to where the elk are at.Have they started to make there way back north or still in the rolling country in Cebolla and Mesa de los Vejils? Any information is greatly welcomed. Thank you

A suggestion for you is to look at the south rim of Mesa de Las Viajas. North of Abiquiu Lake/Monastery Road. You will not have to fight the mud and there are elk there. Good luck

Is it a unit wide tag??

That was my same thought for the first day until the sun drys the mud out some. Also was thinking the area by echo.

So the hunt is Unit wide but limited to west of highway 84. I have access to the ranchers property and also to the public on that side of the unit.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-17 AT 10:05PM (MST)[p]Good luck! Be sure you know the road status. If you're on private land or en route to private land you're probably ok, but if you're on USFS, know that the Carson NF closes a bunch of roads between Jan 1st and May.

I had a depredation hunt in the eastern subunit of 51 last March. I had never hunted that unit so it didn't cross my mind that the roads could be closed. I should have checked. Anyway, I drove into an area on a forest road but I didn't realize that all the roads were closed...there were no closed area signs, no gates, nothing to tell me they were closed.

After walking around the area I was eating lunch in my truck & a game warden drove up. He was nice... checked my license, pointed me to another area since I didn't see anything there and he kept driving further into the area. After finishing my lunch I had to get back to Abq so I didn't check out the area he pointed me to.

Halfway to Abq the warden called me to tell me I had been driving on a closed road & the area he pointed me to was closed as well. He didn't know the roads were closed either but if I had harvested a cow I would have been cited. It's the one time I'm glad I didn't get something.

My son got a call for a depredation cow elk hunt in 51 for next weekend.

He declined because his buddy has a ibex depredation hunt same weekend.
Never hunted 51, so we would have been asking the same question.
