Special tags....

I was going to wait until the application time closed to post this, but I'm impatient...
Did anyone actually apply for the special elk or deer tag? (Governors tag equivalent)

I'm very interested to see if it draws in a bunch of applicants and we see a minor increase for draw odds in other highly sought after areas.

I'll be honest, I applied for the special deer tag this year.
I was fortunate enough to get permission to hunt a 45K ranch as a back up this year, so I shot for the moon with my tags! I figured I either draw an amazing unit or I don't draw and I am still lucky enough to go hunt this ranch.

How about you guys? Anyone apply?
If you were fortunate enough to draw the tag, what would you be holding out on to shoot?

With my incredibly poor luck drawing any tags I stayed with my usual second rifle in semi-decent units.

I did not apply for either hunt. Just hoping it draws enough other people to improve my odds of what I did put in for. But I don't know how many archery hunters would put in for these tags. I guess we will see how it affected the odds when the new odds reports come out later this year

I usually put only archery hunts, so you can count me out!
I just like the idea that I can chase some mule deer in some unique times with a bow!

We shall see!

Well I hope you draw what you want!
Good luck

Ya I hear you on the deer one. It crossed my mind but I didn't do it. Would be cool to chase some mule deer in some units in January where it's not regularly available.

>I put in for deer.

Good luck!
I think it would be neat to see someone on here get it.

I think that would be awesome.
If I were ever to be so lucky to draw that tag, I'd probably take Dec 15 through Jan 15th off and hunt certain areas.

I have 5 in my group that put in for both the deer and the elk premier hunts. Of course it did not hurt that they all have guaranteed tags for both elk and deer regardless of the draw results so it did not seem like that much of a sacrifice!

I finally got to a place where I can do a moose hunt this year, and selected a northern BC hunt for this October with an old college buddy (been almost 30 years since I last got to hunt with him). Part of the negotiations with my wife was that I would forgo hunting NM this year unless I draw a OIL type tag, so those are the only ones I've applied for, including both the Governor's elk & deer; oryx, ibex, and BHS too.

I expect to see nothing but red this year...but I'm ok with that. I'm looking forward to seeing how all the rest of you do, and wish you all luck.

I hear ya mozey. I'm in a similar situation with my safari this summer. Maybe one of us still draws a tag so good you just have to hunt it regardless!

Let's just say that if my wife draws a tag, it's gonna be a damn good one. If I see green for her I will be on cloud nine, first rifle elk in 16D as a third choice ain't too shabby of an app! ?

Hunt Hard. Shoot Straight. Kill Clean. Apologize to No One.

Good luck!

Thanks iccyman001, Good luck to you as well!
Is this the first year for these tags?
Does NM have this tag for deer, sheep, etc,?

Thanks for all the info and Good Luck to all on this draw
It would be very cool if a MM NM forum brother won!

This is the first year they have run this. (Unless they use to do it back in the day and then it was turned off)
It's for both elk and deer.
I think it's a really cool option and I wouldn't be surprised if it cut down a bit on application numbers for other units, specifically "sought after" units.

It doesn't sound like much, but even if 500 people put this as their first, that's 500 applications taken away from the other units as a first.

I also hope a MM'r draws one of the tags, if not both!
