Turkey opener

Anybody take a youngster out today for opening day of the youth hunt? Whos headed out next weekend? Forecast shows for 40+mph winds.

Took my nephew out and he was able to tag out today. First hunt.

Went out with my boys and we didn't here any gobbles... saw a flock of 10 hens. FS gates are still closed so its limited on where to hunt.

Took my daughter out for her first turkey hunt. Hiked about a mile into our spot and got set up. Started to call and immediately got a response from several hens about 200 yards off. Sat quiet until we could see the flock coming in. There were about 20 birds, with at least 5 toms. Did some quiet calling to keep their attention and hope to pull a tom over. Three toms spotted the Wind Drifter decoys and started heading our way. Ended up taking the larger tom at about 25 yards. He flopped into a creek and proceeded to make a mess of his fan.

What had been planned as a three day hunt turned into a 10 minute hunt. So we spent the rest of the weekend just hanging around camp and doing some shed hunting. She has been turkey hunting with me for 5 years and it was great to be there when she got to shoot her first one.

Good job with the youth hunters.

We had a couple rough outings. I took my nephew out. It was his first ever hunt. He had the shits the first day and couldn't get to far from the truck. This morning found locked gates to the state land we were going to hunt.

I am really hoping to get him on a bird in the next couple weeks.

man, if i want my kids to get into hunting i just take them. but then again i only see my kids twice a year and we all love hunting. maybe thats why i love other states (or is it other countries???) My 6 year olds can shoot mature animals even if the mean mom in vegas refuses to let them take hunter ed.
