Hi gang, I went to the hotel to play alittle pool and have a few Markers and Coke after I killed out on The Cottonwood Ranch with USO. Anyway, I was telling my buddy about the St James and some of the stories I've heard and read about and I was wondering if anyone on MM had any stories or history to share? Also does anyone have any stories or history about the Lincoln County war, Billy the Kid and the Regulators?

Thanks for your time

Joe

Pick up the book called "to hell on a fast horse". It covers everything you can imagine about the Lincoln county war and those who participated in it. Very interesting read.

Are you the culprit? Tell..... the story

Alright Joe,I think I'm ready to tell my story about the St. James hotel.

About 5 years ago I decided to stay the night there after a successful guiding trip on the Valle Vidal. Alone, I decided to go to the bar and knock back a few to unwind and relax. I noticed this amazingly stunning red head sitting alone at the bar so I approached her. I tipped my hat and sat next to her and got a soft smile back from her. I then proceeded to tell her one of the nastiest dirty jokes I have ever heard at elk camp. She just looked over and again just a smile. I thought wow! I truly expected either a slap or a belly busting laugh but a smile was good enough. I see her then proceed to rifle through her purse and pull out a pen. She proceeded to write me a note on a napkin and passed it to me. Half drunk and in the dimmely lit bar I struggled to read what she wrote but here's what I read, I know your trying to get my attention but I'm dead! Stunned I jumped off my bar stool and looked at the note again and the word was deaf not dead. I struggled with all my might not to laugh for fear of insulting her and wrote out what I thought she had wrote which made her bust out laughing. We swapped numbers and continued our courtship via text message.
After a few rounds made our way to my room. Here is where it gets interesting! After an hour of really "getting"to know each other, I here a loud pounding on the door which scared the s#!t out of me! I wrapped my self in the bedspread and cracked open the door. Two of New Mexico's finest were standing at the door and announced there presence with "New Mexico State police open the door and let us in!" Shocked by the sudden entry into the room, my friend grabbed the sheet and pulled it up to her chin. I asked why they were there and they said they were called about strange noise's coming from my room and the possibility that a woman might be in trouble because the complainent could not intelligently understand if she was asking for help. So they had to make contact to ensure the safety of my friend. As the shorter " rounder" officer approached my friend she quickly reaches for her purse and starts fumbling through it. Before I could open my mouth to say a word both officers through down on her with weapons pointed yelling drop it!
Suddenly and with out warning I hear what I can only describe what sounded like a machine gun! I had puckerd up so fast and tight that I farted so loud both officers turned to look at me, I then shouted," don't shoot she's deaf!" After a few deep breaths and even a couple laughs they called in the all clear and left.

I will never forget the St. James or that night as long as I live. I frequently relive this event in dreams so much so, that I struggle to understand if it really happened or if I got black out drunk and dreamed the whole thing! But, one thing has changed in my life, I have since learned sign language!

LMAO! Hell of a great story That's was fantastic. There were at least 3 or 4 twists that I thought were coming and that I knew where the story was going and it didn't. But it didn't mess up the end result

Very cool!

Joe

Funny thing is I'm having deja vu while writing this

Joe, glad you enjoyed the recanting of that event. This episode is entitled; "Silence, death awaits us!" Its part of a Netflix original airing this fall from the future hit series entitled, "Memoirs of the St. James!" It is rated R and will have Amy Adams starring in the role of Silence and The bone collector's very own Travis "T-Bone" Turner starring as yours truly! LOL!

Good stuff I'll have to check it out

Well, gentlemen, I just joined this forum as I will be moving to Alamogordo this fall from Oregon, and I will have to say that you fellas have a wonderful sense of humor!
I am trying to remember how many bullet holes I counted in the ceiling of the St. James last time I was there. Whenever I am in that part of New Mexico, I always have to pay my respects to Philmont, where I did a 50-miler as a Boy Scout in 1968.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-17 AT 10:31AM (MST)[p]Welcome WaylandCanyon glad to have you aboard! There are a lot of great people on here! Watch out for elkassassin AKA Bobcat Bess he's in the general hunting forums mostly and here in the NM forum it's Stomper!

Just kidding these guys are great. Your not really part of the group until one or both has given you a hard time! It took me several years before I got my name put on STOMPERS "I HATE YOU TOO LIST"

I hunted the Cottnwood Ranch just above the Philmont back in 2004 beautiful country. Were you able to draw any tags this season?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-17 AT 10:53AM (MST)[p]I stayed the St.James in Philmont area(?) one night about 7 yrs ago. Figured I owed myself.
Got a pricey motel room, halfway decent steak & heard some of the best BS I have ever heard in a dinner house.
From the lines given to the hotties, to the rich AH's bragging about themselves a bit to loud, the "hunters" talk of tough stalks, to the dressup cowboys & gals...
It was entertaining.Pricey for OK food & room for sure...

Joe, many thanks for the welcome and warning.
My wife and I were half packed to move from Salem to Ashland in southern Oregon when she mentioned that she wants a divorce.
Uhhhh ....
After I picked myself up off the floor, I started thinking and looking hard at places I know around the west, and Alamogordo came up on my radar. I am hoping to be down there by October. No tag applications this year. Next year, you bet.
By the way, I chose my user name, WaylandCanyon, for the following reason. When my great-great grandfather, Jim Wayland, a Mexican War veteran, died suddenly in Kimble County, Texas, in 1883, his widow Mary gathered up her unmarried kids and drove a herd of cattle to La Luz, where she ranched for the rest of her life. She and three of her kids are buried in Alamogordo. So I have some blood in the sacred soil of New Mexico. I feel in a way like I am coming home. One of the first things I will do is head for Wayland Canyon, where they ran cattle, in the Lincoln National Forest.

Been fallowing this post and I'm confused... You guys talking about the St James in Cimarron or some place in Lincon County ?
Jack

Both now Jack LOL!
