So after a few very controversial posts we've made some mends and now I have a very serious question to ask . YES PAUL,EVERY ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO APPLY WHEREVER THEY WANT. This is not an "I'M BETTER THAN YOU POST " ....
I AM wondering why in the world would a guy back pack in to some really tough country, 9-11 miles in, in Sept, looking to put down an elk that can leave you with 400 lbs of meat to haul out on YOUR BACK, BEFORE IT SPOILS. ??? With out a horse and mule pack out service arranged in the event they kill one.

I really do not like the fact an animal loses its life just to end up buzzard meat , due to the fact that a person does not care enough to realize this is not an ethical thing to do.
I recently received a call from a guy who learned the hard way to set up a pack out in the event he is successful. Made me happy to see he learned from his mistake . At the same time i think a guy should use his brain and not get caught up in the moment. Don't you all agree this is not the right thing to do ? Or is it just me?

Don't want to fight, would just like feed back.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-09-17 AT 11:16AM (MST)[p]A few years ago, I received a call from a young man from Wisconsin. I was a Forest Service biologist at the time, and this guy and his buddy drew archery elk tags in unit 16B. He called for advice, as he had never hunted elk before, not had he ever been in NM. I told him exactly where I would hunt if I had his tag. On their way to the unit, he and his buddy stopped in to introduce themselves and thank me for my advice. Well a few days later they stopped back by the office with news that they had taken a beautiful 5x5 bull. They still had a few days left in the hunt, and an un-punched tag. I asked if they were going back for another bull and they explained that they felt their chances of killing another bull were good, but they weren't going back in. They said it completely wore both of them out packing out the 5x5. They were both fit young men, and very prepared with good gear. They were hunting no more than five miles into the Wilderness from the Trailhead. They said they just didn't have it in them to pack out another. I developed a lot of respect for those two.

We hunt 16B on foot fairly regularly. As long as you are smart and don't go super deep in it isn't all that different than any other hunt in the Gila.

Well I sure wish there were more people with brains like those 2, and Rabid . This is not just an opinion ,but a hard truth, with out stock in nasty country 8, 9,10,11 miles is to feel for early season back pack hunts. Please people ,be thoughtful, and remember a life is a life, so if we are taking an animal let it not be on vein.

A buddy of mine went in last year on foot with 5 guys shot a bull at 7 am had a 12 hour pack out and said he would not do that again. He packed in under 3 miles. I bet that was the best tasting elk ever!

Yep exaxtly!!! I know where that certain gentleman was hunting and it's an easier part of the unit and still HELL getting em out. Please just use your brains and be considerate.

I think a lot of people underestimate dealing with an elk sized animal, whether it's 1/2 mile in or 5 miles in. If they can't back the truck up to it, they don't know what to do with it.

I can't imagine packing out even a deer sized critter without a frame pack, yet so many people don't even have that.

For myself 80% of the time it is all about the meat, and handled well makes a huge difference, just last year a guy in ca. killed a buck and I saw him in the parking area with the head and cape, I thought he had the meat also, he did not and this is black tail season so the 24 hr average temp was in the 85 degree range, it was more like 30 hrs or more before recovered and he thinks its alright. just the other day in the elk forum a guy in wyoming made sure he got his cape and antlers out, and when he returned for the meat the bears were eating it knowing full well there were bears in the area.these things to me are flat out disrespectful to your quarry. Its not even legal to lose meat, in montana its not legal to bring antler out before meat.I myself always go prepared for recovery no matter what and to far and not strong enough is no excuse or not using your brain.

Too funny...let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Know your limits, train harder than you think necessary, have a great pack, and hunt with a buddy willing to help out if needed!

Lol we have had too much snow but wouldn't mind having some more ha ha. But yes too many people are too used to having the truck right by the kill and not nearly prepared for the long haul just in case. I work with packing in at the least 1/2 mi and at the most 3 mi but am also fit as is my wife and can handle it and have handled it. Is it fun?, no but doable but also I am not a road or vehicle hunter so there is a compromise in there somewhere.

Very foog strategy !!! But 9-11 miles bissy? What's your take?

9-11 is doable if it's 4 fit guys are hunting one tag. That way you can get it all out in one grueling trip.

COME ON Logan YOU'RE KILLIN ME!!!?? HAHAHA I guess in ideal super perfect conditions in super forgiving country it's possible.. PPSSIBLE HAHAHA not here with 3 guys 3 tags esse vato haha

Most people struggle to pack out an elk if they can't drive the pickup or ATV right to the carcass. My brother worked for a butcher for 2 elk seasons and he was appalled with the spoiled elk that were brought in and how someone would bring in "all" the meat from a bull with a total weight of 60 pounds. The meat that was brought in was so filthy that they had to trim off a large amount.

I have personally done it. 9 miles with 3 guys in rough country. It was brutal.
My brother and uncle did it with just the 2 of them from about 8 miles. We are fitter than average and can handle some heavy loads and did not lose any meat either time. However, we had killed and packed out numerous elk from lesser distances before and knew what we were getting into.

We have since gotten much smarter and have always taken at least a single mule or horse and it makes for a much more enjoyable experience. If you pack like it is a backpack hunt the mule carries everything in for you and on the way out the mule gets all the meat and we carry camp. It does not take an entire pack string like a lot of people think.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-17 AT 08:42PM (MST)[p]You know I love playing devil's advocate. In most scenarios I'm with you that it's irresponsible and a bad idea. Only when you know what you're getting into with friends who are on board helping without having a tag of their own is it possible. Some of us don't have the luxury of living where we can have horses. Just have to have the right friends!!
