I purchased an elk tag in 13 to go hunt with my buddy who has never been to unit 13... I have hunted once in 2013 and although I didn't shoot an elk, seen some bulls, one really good one. The ATV's and all the roads are the challenge with 13 as it seems like you cannot get very far from one. I hunted in the south east part of the unit but was considering looking up around Pie town, Datil. I am going the first season and will hunt around the 5th to the end. Tanks, dry or wet, can make a difference if the area holds elk. Not sure what the moisture is like so far in 13 but I know the summer monsoons are what are really needed to finish big. We camped along HWY 169 last time we hunted, slept in tents right along the Hwy pretty much, of course that was the 3rd season back then... Any good glassing vantages that we can hike to look over a lot of good elk country? I know I am asking for a lot but would appreciate any general areas that are a little more remote. I know you don't need to be too far from the road in 13 as the elk are many times not very far from it. The thought of ATV's riding by and spoiling an opportunity is always a challenge.
