Question -

So if you draw with an outfitter, do you 100% have to hunt with that outfitter? Or are there any holes in the system?

What happens if you can't get in touch with said outfitter anymore now that you've drawn? SOL? No deposits made at least.

No, you do not. Most outfitters will make you sign a contract before they put you in for the draw. If you signed one then you have to use him. If no contract feel free to shop around.

One thing to note... this close to the season most outfitters have all their top guides already assigned to hunters so you might be getting the leftovers. I would ask a lot of questions beforehand.

The law stipulates that you have to hunt with an outfitter and have a contract in place with an outfitter, if you drew in the outfitter pool. If you cannot contact the outfitter that you contracted with, then you can go with another outfitter. You would either need to get Game and Fish involved or the original outfitter because there must be a release from one outfitter to the other outfitter. It can be done but there are hoops you must go through. The bottom line is if you have to be with an outfitter.

Make sure that the outfitter that you hire has all the required permits to hunt in the unit that you drew before you sign on with him or make the outfitter transfer.

If he's flaky enough he can't be bothered contacting a client that's drawn a tag I'd be looking elsewhere.

You got some a acurate information above. The law states a two day minimum in the field when applying with a outfitter. What it comes down to is the agreement you have with the outfitter in his contract on the amount of days and services you guys agreed on.I would be calling game and fish to get this figured out ASAP.It's illegal to use that tag without hunting with him for at least two days. I would also carry a copy of the contract with you if you signed up for a two day so you don't have any issues if you get stopped.I Hope everything works out for you good luck this season.

By law you must have a contract with the outfitter before you apply in the outfitter pool of the draw.

Must have a signed contract to use an outfitters number in the draw! Sorry to hear you cannot get in touch. If you use an outfitter in the future make sure he is licensed and insured. Red flag outfitters that cant produce that or say no need for contracts or no deposit.
Take a look at this outfitter!

There is no regulation that prohibits it. Each outfitter runs differently and sets their own rules. Depending on the outfitter, some charge nothing and others charge quite a bit for the same thing. Your decision on who you deal with, what they state in their contract and if you want to pay or find someone that does not charge.

If the deposit is refunded if you don't draw I would like that. I've applied before with a NM outfitter, signed a contract, and did not pay a deposit. Also haven't been lucky enough to get drawn (several times actually), I'm a nonresident in my late 50's and the area we are applying in is long odds at best. HaHa!!Hoping to get picked soon!
