Garrett Vaneklasen is running for State Land Commissioner with a fund raising event featuring Randy Newberg Aug 28 in ABQ.

Imagine having a SLC that advocates camping on state land and pushes for access to landlocked state land parcels!

If your budget or schedule won't allow you to attend the event, consider donating at the event web page.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-17 AT 11:33AM (MST)[p]I for one like it the way it is. Unfortunately there are people who care more about making a mess than keeping the land clean. I can't tell you how much trash I pick up every time I hike, more so on NF and BLM land than on state land. I have to imagine the reason being is the restrictions on state land. Who would increasing access to state lands affect the most? Ranchers, with gates left open and water tanks drained, every hunting season they see a dramatic increase in those simple things that people screw up. If we were all good stewards of the land I would be for this 100% but it's the few who ruin it for the many.

Throwfar:

I see your point, as there are slobs everywhere. We need to balance all interests.

However, the way it is now there are huge areas in the state that are basically unaccessible to hunt because there is no place to camp and it's realistically too far to drive from where we can camp. Maybe it's designated areas. Maybe it's something else.

Plus landlocked parcels that hunters are getting charged for but can't get to (yet the ranchers and outfitters have access to their own private hunting grounds).

But the way it is now, the ranchers get free reign and the hunters are greatly restricted.

I could say the same thing about rolls of barbed wire, dilapidated windmills, old cars, and tons of trash left on state land by the grazing lessee. There are bad apples on both sides.

I think the key is Garrett is pro hunting. That would be a refreshing change in the SLC position.

I may not agree with Garrett on things all the time, but I will support him in this race.
Better than another clown fake rancher, salesman or a so called conservative democrap.....or the one who was there before.

Smarba is absolutely correct. I am a landowner ,and was raised on a ranch and have been on both sides of the fence on this . I personally am taking people into a unit for elk that has private land no hunting signs up , owner is so and so, up on gates that allow entrance to blm . This year all the ranchers went RO for elk in this unit and most of them have the sorriest land to hunt elk on. The reason for this is to try and land lock the average Joe and ILLEGALLY give the government lands for their RO hunters to hunt on. They're gonna be in for a surprise when me ,my guys ,and my horses come the back way in and throw a huge wrench into their little scheme. I will be taking pics with gps coordinates ,and in touch with wardens as soon as the shots start ringing . I for one am tired of all of us being taken advantage of by these types of people . Just hope the wardens aren't under the ranchers thumbs too...

RO tags are only good on deeded lands, not on leased lands.Even landlocked leased lands cannot be hunted with RO tags. That is poaching.
At least on Outside the COER ranches.

I wouldnt vote Aubrey Dunn for Dog Catcher , just a BS political jerk with personal agendas, hardly a voice for the statesmen!
