Unit 2 Muzzy Bull Info

Please don't stone me but I am a NR and I have never set foot in unit 2. It was my 3rd choice and I am pumped to just get the opportunity to chase bulls this year in New Mexico. I am just wondering what to expect? Weather? Road conditions? Pressure? Quantity and or quality of animals? Terrain? I will have a few days to scout before my hunt but thats about it. Anyone with positive or negative experience in unit 2? Thanks.

Hunted unit 2 all my life roads are and will be a concern if any weather roles in (it Will) be prepared with chains a jack highlift jack and shovel . The hunting pressure in this unit has become a problem the elk should be talking but this hunt this year is on a full moon i belive or right after . My advice hit the north side of 64 get up by buzzard park and push east also find a good pond on the north side the elk have really infiltrated this area . The south side gets hammered hard and the elk boogey to the res within a couple days of archery season . and most the elk rut on the res and the hunters push the few remaining elk out . Can be a good hunt but can be miserbale too scouting this unit is a must because its a closed road unit meaning you can get off the main roads all the side roads are locked and gated

Thanks for the info Bobby. I thought i had read somewhere about the roads being bad, i will bring the chains. I didnt realize it was a closed road unit. Makes me wonder if i should bring a cart? Bike? Thoughts anyone?

MTN bikes are a great tool there if im hunting there i usaullay have one handy legs work too tho

I absolutely WILL have it on my app....can be a great hunt and an area that is tough to find them but very rewarding once ya do....

I Guess you struck out ? 2 can be hard for Elk... but I saw two of the biggest Bulls I've ever seen anywhere (in 2) during a Deer hunt.

Please elaborate. I told you its not for the faint of heart and you have to scout in this unit the elk are there trust me on this one. But you have to put time and effort to find them . The fact that its a lcoked gate unit hinders some people but for me its a blessing it means i can get away from the lazy ass hunters who want to drive around.

Ive found tons of elk in this country in spots you would never expect to see them . Elk ive learned are where the people are not . Also that country is very good to glass hard to figure you couldnt turn up elk even from a long way off?

Sorry guys I can't see any new messages on my phone. Strange this happened shortly after I commented on a post made by Stomper that was promptly deleted... Anyway, Yes I guess maybe I am being harsh saying I wont apply for Unit 2 again but man it was tough. Huge unit and we struggled to locate any amimals. They were in bed before daylight, only moved right at dusk and were not talking at all. There was a big rain before the hunt eliminated hunting water in the afternoon. They really acted pressured but I am not sure if that was the case. Some beautiful country though.

When I set cameras for the deer hunts, about 90% of my pictures are of elk....with the occasional deer/buck. Between all of the regular gas traffic, hunters and others just out doing whatever they do....the critters are normally skittish.

I hunted Unit 2 rifle (10/15-18). It was really hot, I only saw one bull and he gave us the slip. We hunted near the Jicarilla, they say there are big bulls in there, I just didn't see them!
