Unit 36 Elk

I have the first archery hunt this year. I'm scouting the western section of the Lincoln Nat'l Forest. Can anyone suggest access roads further north of the Three Rivers site?

Any hints on elk herds in 36 are also greatly appreciated, I've never hunted 36 before.

I don't know of anything north of there. I heard of someone getting access to diamond but it sounded like a pain in the ass.

You can come in from the east Via Nogal and get to most of the stuff north of three rivers in the wilderness with a shorter hike.

Thanks for the input. As the crow flies it might look short, but everyone tells me the hikes are rugged and steep/deep.

I think that's everywhere in the wilderness...

if you are looking for an easier bull, you need to be looking east of town....

DoeNob, how about Ft. Stanton BLM area? The people I've talked to have mixed reviews whether there are elk in there or not. What do you know about it?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-17 AT 03:29PM (MST)[p]I have never held an elk tag in the unit, nor been in it in the fall. I have archery deer hunted it in January and turkey hunted it in April. I haven't set foot in the unit since Spring 2013.

I can tell you there were a lot of elk rubs on the northwest side of Fort Stanton in January 2012. They also had air dropped wheat along Gavilan ridge that year to provide feed because of all the destruction from fires, so that was probably a very off year that had animals in a lot of places they normally aren't.

I saw some of the biggest bulls I've ever seen on the hoof in the desert southwest of three rivers, but that was January, and surely they were pushed off the res by hunting pressure and wouldn't be there in September.

So really I know nothing of value for Sept-Nov - sorry!

IMO you shouldn't be calling at all until you're well inside of 200 yds and best case inside 100yds from the bull. If they are talking get close before calling to them.

>Talking morning and evening, but we
>haven't been able to call
>a bull closer than 200
>yards

We have had good chances. Seen some good bulls. Bow hunting can be tough. Yesterday was a fun day. Bulls screaming. Some close calls. Today. Quite and lonely. We found a dead bull that appearedd to have been gored.

Leave tomorrow at noon. 9 days. In general slower than I expected as for bugling and rut action. But still a ton of fun
