I was due for another bear. Been a few years. Buy my tag religiously every year and hump up and down the mountains hoping to run into one. Actually found one last year with tag in my pocket by it gave me the slip in the rain. We had been scouting in a new unit for us in July and Zach saw 2 bears, that is more than what I see in a year in the area we spend most our time.
We went back for a bear hunt/additional elk scouting and I glassed up this young female in a nasty canyon.
Great way to start the year.

Have eaten most of the backstrap already. Some sausage, chili and stew in the future. Thanks though.

Much congrats, Paul. I'm curious about the flavor--I've been told NM black bears taste like motor oil, so I've been a little hesitant to try it. Of course, I don't actually know what motor oil tastes like, so maybe I might like it...

2nd night of eating it. It is excellent. Very beef like taste. What I have seen, people that say that kind of stuff, normally say it as an excuse to not take care of the meat and take it out of the field. it is not required to take bear meat out of the field, but, I think it should be. An old boar would still be good as sausage or burger. This time of the year they are eating acorns and they are excellent.

We did 100% sausage on the young boar I killed last year and it was delicious. Fried up and mixed with some hatch chile con queso is hard to beat! It was a super bowl crowd favorite.

Hunt Hard. Shoot Straight. Kill Clean. Apologize to No One.

Nice.
Saw a nice fat black one sitting in the middle of a FS road yesterday on a scout/explore route home.
Wonder if he was planting the nail/spike I discovered a few miles later....

Just wondering are you required to take the meat like you do for elk and deer?

Hi Paul congrats!

I also have a question. Besides my elk tag and hunting license what other permits etc do I need? I am bringing a ATV

Thanks Joe
