Elk

Ya. Still early. Just wondering if anybody has been hearing anything. I live in unit 10 and have elk close by but am not hearing anything yet.

Heard a wimpy one last week... probably a young bull. Will try to check my cameras this weekend and put up some pics. The big boys should be polishing them up.

Ya. I've only got one pic of a little bull so far.

Was on a ranch in 12 a few days ago and had two bulls making a little noise. It's getting close and looks to be a good year. 1st hunt should be good.

I was in the Gila yesterday, the bulls were screaming and herded up with the cows, definite pre-rut activity. Rut looks to be early, good luck fellas and ladies.

The rut is not early they do this every year at the end of august up there they are locating each other and moving around the rut and breading will take place mid - late sept as it does every year

Just heard a nice bugle, went out to check.
4 cows & 2 calves walking up around my trees out of the flats by the well. And there heading to the neighbors is a nice big rubbed out 6x6.
Now if they will still be around in Oct.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. The rut is happening early this year.

Negative man the elk rut with in the same time yearly maybe a couple weeks variation in the peak sure that is possible, but the rut correlates with with the changing seasons and daylight so it happens the same time yearly it has to for survival of the calfs they have to be born at optimal time yearly to help with survival . Ive been in the gila this time of year for many years and you are right the elk are talking alot cows calfs and bulls they are social creatures they communicate . the bulls are prob moving alot looking for friends . Thr small bulls are doing the dirty work now but the big bulls have not kicked up and the peak ruting iwll take place as usual roughly the same time yearly with or without bugling . ANy one else here will attest to that . Sure it can vary by a week or two time no denying that but saying early rut cause they are already talking is nonsense they talk this time of year , year in and year out

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-17 AT 09:23AM (MST)[p]What Bobby says is true, the elk rut is the same time every year, has been for thousands of years...all animals have a specific breeding season to ensure survival of their offspring and survival of the species...bugling activity can differentiate from year to year and location to location...i've been in the Gila in early September with bulls screaming like crazy and in the Carson same time of the year different results, CRICKETS...last year in 52 for the bowhunt not a peep, took a friend on a hunt in October in 16C still no talking...different things can play into whether or not they are vocal...

GOOD LUCK HUNTING!!!

Throw, thanks for the update on the Gila, that's great to hear because i'm calling for a friend this weekend!!!

Affirmative I've seen it with my own eye's. It's probably the full moon quickly approaching, mixed with the hurricane causing increased pheromones in the atmosphere, the wolves pushing the elk to rut earlier and more often, and finally Trump pardoning the sheriff has the elk excited. =)

I could be wrong, but I think the geography and climate has something to do with it as well. I know for sure it does with mule deer. Southern warmer climates have a later mule deer rut than do Northern cooler climates.

Another thing to remember, its not the bulls that trigger the rut. They are simply responding to cows coming into season and this can be different from cow to cow. Look at when calves are born in the spring, some are born late May and some are later into June with stories of some calves even being born as early as April. This to me confirms that cows come into season at different times with the large majority being mid-late September as already suggested. The only other variable would be the actual length of the gestation period for the cows, I assume that this can vary by a few weeks similar to humans and other species. I'm no biologist so all of this is speculation.

Bobby is correctamundo !! Just messing around finding each other . Come Friday they'll be on the receiving end of my Hoyt!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-17 AT 05:58PM (MST)[p]It happens the same time every year. It's all based on the length of the day. You might have some variation between Montana and NM due to latitude but that is it. The intensity might vary too, but it is the same time each year.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-17 AT 08:41PM (MST)[p]I could give a ##### less if an elk regardless of sex comes into range. Lol. My freezer is empty.

Excess liquor tends to bring humans into heat faster!!!

This comes off the Elk101 Instagram page. It reads, "The amount of light entering a cow elks pupil is what triggers the estrus cycle, or the "rut." Of course, not all cows come into heat at the same time the older cows usually start first, with the younger cows coming into estrus later. However, cows are generally triggered to come into estrus (and cause the peak rut period) within 5-10 days of the fall equinox. The fall equinox is when the day and night are of equal duration, and for 2017, the fall equinox occurs on September 22. So, if you're looking for peak rutting "action," the 17th-27th of September should get you close."

That being said, good luck to all you letting them arrows fly this weekend, I will be in 16c calling/spotting with my brother-in-law on his hunt until mine kicks off on the 15th.

Bobby had it.
Peak of the rut is last week in Sept.& the 1st week in Oct., usually in the Gila...
Calves just lost their spots in places last week. Some bulls still have velvet.

Had two 4x's shoving each other here this morn, cows could care less as long as they did not come near their calves, then it was ass kicking time.

As stated, it's the cows, and the timeline aligns with the equinix.

As for the late calving, some cows don't take the first time around and will go into estrus a second time around mid-October. I've witnessed bulls going bonkers in this situation too.

Good Luck to everyone in the morning be safe
