LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-17 AT 01:49PM (MST)[p]Heading out to Unit 13 from CA tomorrow morning for the 1st archery hunt. I've hunted unit 13 once before back in 14'. My buddy who just got into elk hunting drew the tag and I couldn't resist going with him, we both have a tag.

Last time I was there we had 3rd season tags, as it was the last year of the 3 archery seasons. I think the bulls may be in different areas from when we hunted before being that the rut is in the very Begining stages.

I hunted with a guide before, this year we are going to do it by ourselves. I killed a really nice bull two weeks ago in Nevada DIY so the pressure is off for me.

My experience of unit 13 is the bulls are very call shy and shut down early in the morning. I also seen a ton of trucks and hunters, very opposite of where I hunted in Nevada.

We have our backpacks and are prepared to spike out to be closer to the elk for the short time they are active in the morning.

I have some areas in mind but don't want to post them on a public forum. I also know hunters are very private about this unit and for good reason.

This is my buddy's first elk hunt and he is very committed to giving this hunt a full effort.

I would be more than willing to trade Jarbidge NV intel for quality areas in 13 or if someone ever wants to hunt blacktail in CA, I can arrange this as well.

All the best this Sept.

Here is the Nevada bull I took on Aug 16th

Why wouldn't I? I killed a really good bull, better than my NV, in NM on Sept 3rd. I think the herd bulls are more vulnerable earlier, before they gather 3 dozen cows.

Truth!!!! No matter the unit

Nothing better than trying to cram in some last minute internet scouting! Ha
I do agree the first hunt can leave some of the larger bulls vulnerable, but I still would rather hunt the late hunt every time. Like you mentioned I am sure the road warriors and hochie mommas are out in full force in the unit as usual. Good luck, I'll be down later in September!

Tony, I'm on a half time break . Up in my USUAL the big bulls are with 20+ cows n 2 days ago shut completely up. How's it going in 13.

It has been hot & drying out quick this year. Tons of feed still green in places tho & tanks with water.
PM me beast if you wish.

Didnt punch my tag on the 1st season archery.I did help my buddy to his first bull. Overall the hunt got good around the 9th and we had a good time.

We went to the north, hunted the Cibola NF and even hit the southern part of the unit. We ran out of time and never seen the east, over by MAG...
