Got a call this morning that I was drawn for the Bosque del Apache refuge depredation mature bull hunt. Does anyone know the what the elk population is like there? Was gonna buy a landowner tag, but wouldn't want to pass it for the refuge hunt if there wont be a chance for a decent bull. Any advice or experiences appreciated, thanks!

They killed some giants on there a few years ago. A friend of mines mom was also called a month ago and shot a 300 class 5x5 in velvet. The warden with her let her shoot what she wanted but told her there was much bigger there. They got a pic of a 350 class bull after they were done.

With prime feed, I can't see how there wouldn't be opportunity at a very respectable bull, and better eating than average too. I'd jump all over that...

A friend of mine was refuge manager there several years ago. He took me on a tour one year I was down hunting NM.

Its a different kind of hunt for sure , farm land mixed in with that nasty grease wood along the Rio Grande, but there are plenty of elk and some mammoth sonofaguns on there!
