Does anyone have any recent experience or info about the route from Osier, CO to FR 87 west of the wilderness coming in from the north CO border? I believe they call this road FR 74 that crosses the CO - NM border. This road is suppose to connect to FR 87 which comes down from Cumbres Pass through Apache Canyon. Is it doable with a 4x4 standard pick-up truck? Really looking for info on the condition of the road passed the river where connects to FR 87. Are there any good trailheads where you could park and then pack into Toltec to hunt? You never hear much about this road or hunting Toltec by accessing from the W / NW.
I have hunted the basin a handful of times for MZ and 1st rifle. I have always used FR 87 from the south and parked at the rim (overlook sign) but have never ventured any further. I wonder what the distance is by vehicle from the overlook sign to the CO-NM border.
Planning to hunt a new area next season. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
