Hello All-

Does anyone know this guy from Alburquerque, NM?

He was cow elk hunting with a buddy in Unit 52 last week up FR93.

I found his camera on the road a few miles away from his camp

Call me at 410-404-0707

Well gosh guys...thanks. Just doing the right thing. I did loose my Wyoming saw up on Brazos Ridge at the peak. I forgot that I gently placed it above my rear ATV suspension on Friday afternoon, and when I drove off Monday PM, I forgot to put it back in my pack. I wonder if I had my business card/contact in there if someone would have called me? I doubt it. No worries.

Well, all good deeds don't go unpaid...Here's the best bull we've ever taken out of Unit 52. My buddy Mike took this perfectly symmetrical 7x6 on Sat evening off one of our favorite parks. This big boy came wondering through at 5:30pm and met the business end of Mike's .50cal right in the throat. He dropped like a stone. This full frontal shot, placed about 10" under the nose/chin, and placed dead center of the neck is absolutely my favorite shot when its presented under 60-70yds and you have the full neck visible in your scope at 2x power. Deadly. Never once have I lost a bull with this shot. Never once had to track a bull with this shot. Over 100 yards and this shot is far less surgical, and I would never take it. I'd just wait for them to turn broadside.

BTW Bill. Thanks...Camera is in the mail, and on its way. Glad he had a sandisk card in his camera filled with pics. Being a detective is fun sometimes. Everything worked out perfect

For whatever reason, I seem to grossly underestimate elk, and I'm virtually spot on with whitetail and mule deer up to 180". Maybe its cause I live out east and have lots more exposure to deer in general and have hunted mule deer for many years. That fact being known, I actually walked up on this bull at 9pm Sat evening, got the full view of him in the dark, and barked out 305". Once that rack came back to camp the next day, and I took another look, I immediately went up to 310". Then a young fella meets us near our ATV on Monday and says "no way, he's 330".

Here's my 2nd piece of the story: I just picked up my WY Unit 54-1 Cody late season bull from the taxidermist a few hours ago and put a soft tape on him and went through the entire B&C score sheet....I'll scan that in later this evening with a picture of the bull...the evening I dropped him, 4 miles from my truck high up on bald ridge at 4pm with the sun setting on a balmy 5 degree afternoon 2 days before Thanksgiving, I put him at 330". Man am I off. The final gross score shows 360".

So what does this bull score? I'd say 325" and split the difference with the 320" estimate. I've seen 1 other bull in Unit 52, way down lagunitas that was easily a 350" bull. I watched him for an hour with my 70x Leica spotter. He was impressive. I've also seen 3-4 other bulls in Unit 52 that would be similar to this bull. Unfortunately seeing and killing in unit 52 are two completely different things just as most elk hunting areas are

Last comment: There's something said about hunting an average spot every year vs. hunting a fantastic spot every 15th year....you get to know the place, and every spot in NM has the real chance of shooting a 320" eventually....that cant be said for most every public spot in Colorado!

Here's my WY Late season 54-1 bull. Max points. Had my buddy join me for my first 6 days, then he left for home/thanksgiving, and I got him the 7th day. Very tough to do solo and on foot, but I couldn't imagine paying $8500 for a guide.

BTW-He doesn't gross 360". I added a 5th set of circumferences by mistake. I then recomputed with 4 circumference measurements. This puts him at?.....Gross/Net?

Hey CrCountry that was mighty good of you to do that. We have all done something similar to this and wished that someone would find my gear and return it.

Hunters are the best at doing this and you are a great example of that.

I used to live in Farmington for about five years and used to hunt the Colorado boarder for deer on both sides. Love that country and it is still my favorite place I have ever lived in.

Nice Bull how does it look on the wall, or better yet how does your wife like it?

DH53-Funny you should ask! I believe men are being neutered every day, both in the home, and in the court of public/political opinion. My wife has effectively compartmentalized my trophy room in a 12'x12' area now known as my office!! I have 45 pieces of taxidermy jammed in this little space that was once the entire bonus room (30'x40') located over my garage!!! This is a tad bit disingenuous as I did move in my nanny permanently last October and rebuilt this entire area for her new apartment with walk in closet and master bath....so my critters were forced into this new space that I now call home! I have a 62" Alaskan moose, 3 bull elk, 3 mule deer, antelope, and piles whitetail deer crammed onto these 3 small walls. What has become of my new life!?!?! Married with kids and a live in nanny! My WY elk now resides in the corner of my dining room floor! My son wants it in his room, so he may inherit it....and before long he will claim it, and I'll never get it back...once again, life can be a slow decent down the bathtub drain....and I'm the guy getting sucked down into the septic tank! Actually, life is great, but when your existence is being reduced to a 12'x12' office, you know you've lost, and your wife has won....And I still don't get laid! Man, times are getting lean around here

...And I still don't
>get laid! Man, times are
>getting lean around here

She can put your taxidermy wherever she wants but they are called "Wifely duties" for a reason - not optional!

Not too lean if you have a nanny. lol

Put that bull in your son's room and let him aspire to surpass it for the rest of his life.

Several things come to mind thinking about your dilemma, but, as a moderator, I better pass. hahaha!!
