After years of my wife watching me from the sidelines she decided last year to join the game!! Last year she drew her second choice elk ,which was a first season rifle tag for bull elk in a unit which proved to be challenging both physically and mentally. The hunt turned out to be much better than expected as far as rut activity and elk numbers and she killed her first bull at 9:30a.m. opening day . 304" bull , not bad for her first bull.
This year she drew her third choice ,which was the second rifle hunt in the same unit .. I knew from the experience of taking several others in much better units on the second rifle hunt that this was going to be a VERY difficult hunt. I was actually quite nervous to let her down and not find a bull. So after seeing the harvest report from this hunt the past year that only four bulls were taken that she would not be passing any legal bull, especially being shes only on her second year . Strangely,I was anxiously awaiting the challenge . By 8:30 a.m. we had seen four legal bulls and were able to keep eyes on two of them and slip in by 2:30 p.m.she made a 320 yard shot on her second bull ever. So we quartered him hung him in the shade and went back to camp . The next day after a good breakfast we grabbed the horses and made our 6 mile one way trip to pack this bull off the nastiest stuff I've taken my stock on ever. So the story is long only because I'm so proud of this woman being up for the challenge even with all the odds stacked against us. Over the weekend we talked to 8 others who haven't even seen one elk !! Very proud!! Enjoy the pics and thank you for reading.
