Res/Non Res Group App

I believe will be able to apply as a resident (moved here literally with one day to spare) this year but I have a buddy still in TX who is interested in doing an archery antelope hunt.

I've seen a few places that Res/NR can apply on the same app (magazines and forums) but haven't been able to find/confirm it on the NM website. Anyone have an idea where that might be on there or in the RIB?

Also I assume that a Res/NR group app is drawn as part of the NR draw?

I will put in for mule deer and elk on my own but would like to hunt antelope with my buddy if we are able to draw together.

Thanks!

Yes resident and non-resident may apply/attach together on the same application, and you are correct that you will both be drawn in the NON-Resident pool.

To clarify you will each be drawn in the respecive pool (Res or NR). HOWEVER, if your application is pulled from the hat you will only get tags if both R & NR tags are available.

So your odds of success will be those of NR, since NR tags are more difficult to draw.

You will be hurting your own odds substantially by applying with a NR.

For simple example, if NR odds are 3% and R odds are 10%, when you apply together bpth tags must be available so the odds of both of you getting a tag will be 3%.

10-4.

I'm not too worried about it as it'd just be a fun hunt so we'll see what happens. NR odds aren't actually too horrible for the bow hunt thankfully.

Elk and deer I definitely don't want to hurt my chances like that though and will be applying on my own.

Appreciate the quick info.

Cheers!

I usually recommend to my NR buddies to apply on their own application. If they draw, I get to go along anyway (and vice-versa!)

This because, I'm pretty sure that in the above example (10%R & 3%NR draw odds) which is an "and" operation (both pools need tags available), the odds need to be multiplied... 0.10 x 0.03 = 0.003 or 0.3%. Which is much worse than the NR odds alone.

Whereas if you apply separately, the odds of either one of you drawing a tag are (0.1 + 0.03 = 0.13 or 13%) almost 50x higher.

I doubt I can convince you on this forum, but that is incorrect, you do not multiply the odds. Carl (Smarba) is correct, the group %odds turn out to be whatever %odds are lowest, in this case 3%.

If the R and NR applications were actually separate (each getting there own random#), then the odds of drawing both would be the product; in this case 0.3%. But since they are not separate applications you do not multiply odds, just look at the worst case.

So applying with NR will usually (but not always) hurt your chances, but not to the extent you would expect if you multiply the odds.

My bad. JR and Carl are righter.

There still needs to be two (or more) tags left, so that'll lower the odds a little bit, and then there is the issue of multiple choices, which will increase the draw odds, and then...this is getting more complicated than I have time for.

I'll default back recommending joined apps only if you refuse to go hunting unless both draw. Otherwise, on seperate apps, if my buddies draw a tag I get to go even if I don't draw, and vice versa.
