Getting kinda slow around here waiting for the draw results.. anybody have any 2017 success pics or stories to share , instead of listening to crickets chirping. !??!

Well my oldest son just completed hunters ed, so that's a success. I started hunting six years ago to learn it, have fun, see the outdoors in a new way, and expose my kids to the lifestyle of hunting. My dad was pretty old and had already retired from hunting by the time I was thinking about it.

So, my plan is paying off. Robinson is really excited to finally put in for elk! Hell, I bet he draws his first bull tag before I do and I would totally be fine with that.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-18 AT 06:28AM (MST)[p]Got this guy solo on public land last weekend. Still cant find a big boy, but, was happy to get him.

Barbary seems to be going well this year. Friend of a friend got this biggest barbary I've ever seen about 30 min west of Roswell. Still trying to upload picture!

Solid work Paul ! Congrats on using the timer on the phone! I still don't know how??
Viper did you or Mark kill that nasty ram?

Nice ram Paul! Have you heard back from BigDaddyL yet on those areas you turned him and his son on to earlier in the year?

Guessing around 25". It seems that is about he size sheep I always get. Totally screwed up on what would have been my best sheep the first day of the hunt with Zach. Maybe that is why he chose to spend the day with his girlfriend instead of going with me. LOL

Hunting solo, may be my favorite way to hunt. Of course with my son I would never turn down.
it was just a super special day. I got up at 4:00 and left my house around 4:30. It is about 60 mile drive to where I was hunting. From the time I left my house till the time I got home I never saw a car or a single soul. About 40 miles of that is dirt road, but, almost always I at least see a rancher checking cows, or another car on the road. That in itself made it surreal. When I got there I parked a quad on one side of the mountain range (with a flat tire ugh) and then drove the truck about 8 miles to other side, but, really only about 3-4 miles as a crow flies. It was fogged in. so I could only glass at intervals. When I got to the best vantage point I was completely socked in. I took a nap. When I woke up it was breaking up real good. It was about 10. I spotted a herd of sheep about 1500 yards out. Each time I counted them I got a different number so I knew many were on the back side of the ridge. Saw no shooters, but, figured I getter try to get closer and abetter angle. Hour or so later I am 450 yards. That is on the outside of my comfortable shooting range. At one point I had counted as many as 16 sheep, but, still I felt there was a chance a better ram was on the back side. These sheep are terribly hard to judge. Finally around 12:30 they got up from their beds and were moving up the ridge I was up to 19 and I thought I may be seeing the El Jefe. So here I had all day to get set up. Had a decent ram at 450 and I completely whiffed the first shot. I totally jerked the trigger. Jacked a shell in and put one right through both shoulders.
Took me about 40 minutes to get to him. Got pics. broke him down and got all the meat off him. Put everything in the pack and could not get up off the ground with it. The last 6 months I have been having lots of problems with my knee so I already had it wrapped hard with a brace and 2 ace bandages. I turned it into 2 pack loads and headed towards the quad. Dropped the first load at an old 2 track that looked like it may go the right direction and got the 2nd load. Road the 8 miles to my truck with a flat tire got there at dark. Got home at 9. Wife was worried because there is not a bit of cell service the entire way.
Just a great day, being by yourself, having a challenge and absolutely no contact with people. Recommend it to everyone.

We are going for the hail mary tomorrow. I had to work this week. I have appreciated all the help and recommendations. Wish us luck and thank you again.

Good luck BDL! With all the success you have had to date, have a feeling you will get it done. Keep us posted!

2017-18 was probably my best year ever. Started off by drawing this once-in-a-lifetime trophy:

Followed that up with this once-in-a-lifetime trip to British Columbia:

And finally, in my humble opinion the best "trophy" of them all, I present the future mozey:

I've been (not so) patiently waiting a long time for this--I can't wait to take him on some adventures... :)

Thank you for sharing Mozey!one heck of a year with a baby boy to ice the cake! Congratulations my friend,in for a lifetime of adventures!

Well, our success rate took a dip. We were unable to fill my son's Barbary Tag. We seen two at the same time early in the hunt (first weekend) at about 7-750 yards. When we tried to get a little closer, they disappeared on us. Maybe next time.

Dang - hard act to follow.

Me and my buddy drew 2 of the 4 NR unguided tags in 16e and did it by ourselves. Rented a toy hauler and drove it and the bikes from Houston. Scouted 5 days were into very good bulls the whole time scouting. Rough country, it beat us and our gear to holy hell.

Opening day was a cluster, but we hammered it out. He took a great bull and I punched my tag on our last ditch effort.

Here's my raghorn, but he's a good eatin!
