Premium statewide deer question?

I applied for new mexico deer this year and saw this as a choice and it sounded pretty good if you were lucky to draw it. But after I applied I noticed it said quotas apply. Does that mean with only 1 tag a NR can't draw it since technically there aren't enough tags to give out to even have a NR quota? Hope that makes sense. Thanks for any responses.

One tag. Residents only. Surprising how many NR and outfitted applied last year.
Wasted choice.

I'll just cancel my app and redo it but it's pretty shady of the game and fish to not list it as a NM resident only hunt. There are plenty of other hunts within the regs that say NM resident only least they could do is clarify that regarding this tag.

They obviously saw there was confusion when last year a ton of Nr applied for it without a chance to draw it and they failed to change the verbage in this years regs. Every other state I know of that has a governors tag that is strictly for residents they make that very clear. Very easily could have changed the wording from quotas apply to "NM residents only" and avoided people wasting their choices.

Hi bone, I'm almost positive that tag is for R and NR. Nowhere that I seen says next to the draw numbers that a NR can't draw for it, like the Sargent's and other WMA areas and cow tags do. I'm going to call them in the morning. You should do the same

I believe Joe is right. There are R & NR tags. But I would check with SF ,as I never bother with them with my luck...
A buddy & I helped a guy with one of the Gov. Elk tags last year & he was from LA.
Been offered finders fees for help from other NR Gov tag holders over the years.

Thanks for the responses. I'll call them and see but still leaning towards residents only with only one tag. There are several governors tags including a raffle and an auction one that the guy from LA could have received other than this one. I'll let you know what they say.

The Deer 1-700 and Elk 1-700 can only be drawn by a NM resident hunter.Page 44 , quotas apply....If there is only 1 tag , 84% of 1 is 1...

LAST EDITED ON Mar-20-18 AT 11:32AM (MST)[p]Spoke with New Mexico game and fish, the only way a nonresident could draw the tag is if no residents apply... that's not gonna happen so don't waste your choice on the statewide elk or deer.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-18 AT 08:45AM (MST)[p]So what about the RMEF Gov. elk tags auctioned off? The MDA or whatever deer tags? I am ignorant on the subject I guess.

If it's an auction or a raffle tag it can go to anyone that has the most money or gets lucky in the raffle. Since these are technically draw tags they apply the quota rule which makes NR not eligible to draw them.

It seems like a waste of a choice. I don't recall how many applied for deer but for elk you had a way better chance at drawing a rifle elk tag in the Valle Vidal, Sargents, or valles caldera than drawing this tag. It's almost as hard to draw as a bighorn sheep tag. So why do people waste their choice on that?

^^^^ So most hunters can afford to burn up a deer choice for a shot in the dark deer tag. NM is not reputable for great deer hunting. Elk on the other hand, Ive never even it begun to think of burning an elk choice for that, and honestly deer either.

Agreed, NM deer hunting isn't great but I can think of 3 great choices that have greater odds to draw than that 1 tag. For archery at the top of my head I'd try 2b (Jan), 14, and Sugarite. Cause even if I draw that 1 lucky tag I'm gonna pick 1 of those mentioned units to hunt anyway.

Any off in the state is better brother. It's just a shot in the dark. One that will never take ,but it is possible someone can draw a dream hunt .

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-18 AT 11:13AM (MST)[p]Aaron,

I did the premium deer tag as my number 1 and my 2 & 3 were a unit I will 100% draw.
I did the premium tag because my plans in place are already to hunt the 100% draw odd unit.

So if for some crazy odd reason I drew the premium deer tag then it would be cool, but if not then I am doing what I'm already planning.

My same thought would be for elk (I didn't do the elk one this year)

I always alternate my number 1 choice... 34, 16D, etc.
then my 2 & 3 are the better draw odd unit that I'd like to hunt every year if possible.

So to me in those scenarios it's not a waste. It's just the level of risk I want to take that year.

Next year I am cashing in on some WY points, so most of my NM applications will be top tier things that I probably won't ever draw. If I don't draw then I go to WY like planned.... if I do draw then I am in for a busy, yet amazing year.

Everyone has different strategies. I think it's a cool option to plug in at certain times

The good thing about WY, is elk results for nr are posted before our NM deadline. I'm sitting on a fair amount of WY points as well:)

I wonder how many applications that went for the premium hunt had folks attach? I don't see a reason that G&F should limit it to residents. Mathematically challenged hunters can donate to G&F as much as anyone.

LMAO! I would be willing to bet more than one attached!! Or put it as a last choice ! I do agree ,I think it should be open to NR as well!

Much respect however I disagree. This hunt should be a resident hunt only until other state's can retire the point system. I have always disagreed with the way our state is managed expect for the draw system. Where else can you apply except Idaho with a level playing field? Not to mention how complex applying can be in other states. Long story short if NR want to bash NMDGF don't apply!

Deepsix well said! I really didn't even think about that! Our state REALLY does have the best draw system out of any state.
