Help pass the time - Barbary Proposal

Was listening to the last game commission meeting recording and they are in the preliminary stages of Barbary, Ibex and Oryx changes for the next 4 seasons. Nothing officially posted yet for comment, but heard this:

-Increase public Barbary licenses by 25%
-Combine the 2 hunts together. Units 29-37 would be all 1 hunt.
-Spread out the hunts. No longer just entire month of February
--5 day hunt Late October (Barbary Rut)
--then 3 more 10 day hunts 475 tags each

Thoughts on proposal? I like it with the exception of more tags. I think current levels is fine based on the numbers of sheep I'm seeing. But like the idea of spreading out hunters (less crowding) and combining the units.

I also like the idea of spreading out the Barbary hunts. It is nice having the entire month of February so can spread out the hunt. I would rather spend 2-3 days hunting a week during the entire month of February but having multiple hunts would help spread out the pressure.

Id like to see less days , more hunts, but then the first few hunts are gonna be super tough to draw...But if it stays the way it is thats fine , I drew it this year and was lucky it was a month long because I wasn't going able to go until the last few days...

Wonder why they want to increase the tags? Seams like the OtC is already doing a fair job keeping the sheep located in primary areas or core area.

I really scratch my head on why majority of tags in this state go roller coaster style. Numbers get high and almost to high, so instead of small increass we do a little big horn shoot out and smash the numbers.... IE mount Taylor cow hunt.

Not saying a tag increase isn't in order but what is the reason/justification?

The tags increased a few this year already.

I would love to have hunts broken up. I would rather wait to draw a great tag myself than do what I did this year. In the mean tim I'll keep OTC had better luck on that.

OCHO, I wonder the same , but this was my first experience with Barbary sheep in just one area , so Im not sure what numbers are like state wide in other areas..I can say theres more sheep there where I was at than deer, heck there was more elk than deer and that wouldn't be a surprise other than I was in the nasty rocky desert...

There was quite a lot of discussion on Oryx. Overall, I think they want to increase tags, but there was a lot of back and forth on making them OIL or more general tags.

Ibex, population control has been successful. Thinking they have between 700-800 Ibex on the mountain. So they are going to stop with the Depredation hunts and just up the F-IM tags thru the regular draw from 50 to maybe 100 or 200 per year. Nothing new on tag levels for Bow, Muzzy or OIL.

I wish they would stop letting people kill the females. If kids want to shoot them that is fine but I get sick of everyone else killing them. Just hurts the population.

I think it depends on the species. Deer, Antelope and Elk I would tend to agree with you. Lots of hunts in many states for those animals, give the majority of any female tags for population control to the kids.

I will say that my Dad and I have gotten to hunt Ewe Bighorn and F-IM Ibex for the first time in the past couple years and wouldn't trade the experience for the world. You might put in for your OIL hunts for those species and never ever get a tag, so we were thankful for the opportunity.

I am only talking about Barbary. The tag is not hard to draw compared to some of the others. The only reason you should shoot a Barbary ewe is if you are under 18 or starving to death.

Oh sorry, thought you were talking about Ibex since there is no female only hunts for Barbary. Your opinion is more of a public service announcement rather than useful feedback on these proposals. Pretty sure the dept will not do ewe or ram only tags for Barbs.

2 steps forward, 1 step back.

Why combine all units? If anything split hunt codes exactly the same as other big game units.

With them combined it creates the chance for hunters to overload one particular area, which I thought was why they made 2 hunt codes in the first place.

I am also a fan of the month long season. I'm betting the Harvest Reports show an average of only a few days hunted (whether successful or not) so that may be the logic of shortening the season.

But what the HR can't describe is that for a month long season there are 4 weekends. By the time a weekend or 2 get waylaid by family or kiddo activities and another has high winds forecast, many of us only do hunt a few days. But the longer season gives us the flexiblity to fit in the hunt without burning vacation.
