I just looked up the NM big game results and my teenage daughter drew a 2C archery hunt for mule deer. Any assistance or advice would be appreciated. We've never been to the unit but look forward to spending the end of December scouting and hunting in January.

Thanks.

Good luck, I know that your daughter drew one of the best deer tags in New Mexico....not sure your going to get much love on your post though.... my son drew a youth 23 burro mountain tag and can't get a single person to reply... haha

Wild 7, we had your tag 2 seasons ago. Fun,but can be tough for a kid as well. I will send you a PM in a few weeks when I have a little more time

That can be an extremely tough hunt for any hunter, but especially for a kid. Very few deer make it mentally challenging and it can get very cold. One can go several days without seeing a deer.

The unit does have some monster deer, but there are so few that it will take some skill and luck to get a shot at one. My buddy and I didn't get a shot all week.

I would not call this one of the best "youth' hunts in New Mexico. You will see very few deer and many of the deer killed in this unit are killed from the road - if you can get guys to be honest with you most of the big buck photos are taken right after they shot the deer from the road. This is partially out of necessity - the snow is so crunchy and loud that stalking deer in most areas is nearly impossible. I saw a couple great deer while on this hunt but getting close to them is tough. I could have hunted from a ground blind and possibly killed one I simply did not want to hunt that way. Doing deer drives in certain areas can be productive but shots tend to be rushed and at moving deer. If there is not snow on the ground it would be a great hunt, otherwise you will be doing a milk run on the road most days. You can expect shots to be 40-70+ yards. You need to be able to glass 3-4 miles out and then you can come up with a plan - maybe it will warm up enough in the afternoons to soften the snow - it will be very cold in the mornings - usually 10 degrees or much less. This is a trophy hunt not a great youth hunt. That said I am happy to share with you more specifics as I doubt I will ever hunt here again.

Did you hunt the January hunt?

I've never hunted 2C before but a friend did that's a local and he said the same thing it's a tough hunt. He recommended to hunt that unit and the late season be able to shoot out to 100yds LOL!

Good luck

Joe

Had the archery tag 2 yrs ago, surprisingly drew it again this yr. In 2016, i hunted the entire 15 days. Very tough hunt but i had the opportunity to stalk some amazing bucks. It took me 7-8 days to get dialed into some big bucks. Unfortunately, it never came together for me. In fact, I only drew my bow one time in 15 days. Never let an arrow loose. If you dont have the luxury of scouting the weeks leading up to the hunt, i would recommend covering country in tbe truvk and glassing from every vantage point. It's a big unit and deer populations are higher in some areas vs others.
Be prepared for anything and dont skimp on the tire chains. You are likely gonna need them on all 4 tires the entire hunt once you leave the black top.
