LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-18 AT 05:33AM (MST)[p]Hello everyone,

My name is Paul. I'm from Pennsylvania, moved to New Mexico last summer, put in for the Sargent WMA which gives out 10 tags and ended up taking 3 of them with my father-in-law and brother-in-law. (Yes, I'm realizing how insane it is that I got this hunt on my first year)

I have been to Chama once, but I am certainly not familiar with this unit or elk hunting in general. I have been searching for information, but there doesn't seem to be much...probably because not many people get the opportunity to hunt here.

I'm looking for ANY helpful information about the area, hunting, camping, etc. Looks like I'm taking the third hunt from October 20-24, and it is a high power hunt. I'll likely use my hand me down Remington Gamemastsr 760 pump 30.06.

Any advice as far as investments? I'm considering some new radios and a sattelite GPS.

Thanks in advance for any information you may have for me.

If you moved here this year, there is no legal way you could become a NM resident prior to the March 21 deadline to apply for a resident only tag?

He can if he is active duty military

Congrats on your draw. Whole different type of hunting than PA. Good optics, practice shooting longer ranges, and spend as much time physically scouting as you can.
Get good maps and also speak to the biologist for the area. Maybe someone can get you some help, but, the biggest hurdle is that it is a different type of hunting and get used to hunting 20 square miles a day, instead of 1-2. Good luck, hope you guys do well.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info iccy.
I've hunted Sargents twice. It's a great hunt, lots of elk. I'd go to the hardware/feed store in town and ask for a local packer. Will make your life aloe easier if you get one up high.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-18 AT 05:54AM (MST)[p]Sorry, I'm still used to saying this year, even in April. I moved here last summer, but haven't lived here for a year yet. I am a vet (11B) and was stationed at bliss so I'm pretty well used to climbing the mountains and walking ridiculous distances. Usually they were for no reason, so to shoot an elk should be pretty motivating. My birthday was yesterday, so the ole lady gave me my hunting allowance, so I'm going to buy a 4-12 scope instead of my 3-9. Would you reccomend sighting in at 100 or 200?

My father in law grew up in the mountains (sandia park) and has hunted elk multiple times, so we should have a bit of experience with us, just not for the area.

Horses would be a great help as its walk in or ride in. Not that big of place so you can do it on foot but then a ton of work to get one out without horses. GL

Yep!

I have seen a lot about horses. We have a field dress pack and I have a ruck sack I plan to use to haul out. Well also have a couple hands with us as some people that did not draw want to come with us, so we should have at least 5 people all with packs. I'm hoping that'll be enough to haul one out

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-18 AT 07:16AM (MST)[p]Game cart might be useful in that area, I think you can also use bikes. My recollection (from maps only) is that there is one main trail going in, mostly uphill, so the good news is that it will be mostly or all downhill coming out.

Google "gutless method" if you're not familiar with it, bone out the meat (if you don't have horses), 4 guys should be able to do an average sized bull in one trip.

Congrats on the tags and good luck!

Military or not, it only takes 90 days to establish residency in NM, not a year like some states.

Deadline to apply was March 21, which isn't 90 days into the year so no way you could be a resident if you moved here January 1, 2018. But maybe there's an exception for military?
