Im blitzing up to my unit this weekend to hang a bunch of cameras and to find some sheds.
I'm itching to get up there!

Anyone else finding any nice sheds?

I just hadn't seen anyone post any yet, usually we see a few guys throwing up some pictures by now!
My main goal for the weekend is hanging cameras. I will find a shed or two along the way!

I dont think they are ever all picked up. No matter when I go, I find at least 3-4 old ones to every brown.

Found this dead head this year.

Ran into these guys on another shed hunt.

Some bloody bases from this year.

Awesome finds!

I also don't think they are all picked up. I find sheds every fall while hunting and have found old sheds in areas I have walked in previous years that I just missed.

NMPaul,
Are those pigs from NM or another state?

I have videos from my old trailcams of raghorn bulls still packing and sparring as late as the first week in June. They can't all be picked up yet if they're not all dropped yet.

Paul, that is an awesome dead head. Mucho envy...

NM, in an undisclosed location. :)

I always find more white than brown every year. Sometimes in the same spot I was the year before. The white ones really stick out on the forest floor. Sometimes the brown ones you almost have to step on them to see them, especially if they are points down. If I find a big brown I will spend days trying to find the other side, but most of the time I find it the next year when its white.

Great finds. Found some small ones today. As long as you pay NMDFG you can take dead heads. I did get my receipt. They are very reasonable.

Congrats on today?s finds.
I'm very fortunate and always seem to find a few good sheds, but I haven't found that diamond in the rough skull yet. When I do I'll definitely give them a call!

I just don't want to waste their time for a small forkie.

Question, Paul: do you need to notify G&F before you bring a deadhead out, or do you just need to take it to one of their offices once you find it?

...the reason I'm asking is because I know where one about the size of yours is, and if the process isn't too much, I'm thinking about going and retrieving it... ;-)

Technically you need to contact NMDFG first. They have let me bring them in first, but, I have taken a lot of heads over the years. Call your local game officer and tell them, They may let you bring in first.

Agree... I found a heavy 5x5 a few years go, the bull hadn't been dead long. Contacted G&F and took pics, got GPS coordinates, and they let me bring it out and meet up with him later. $30 wasn't bad.

You need to get permission first. Even with verbal permission my brother once had them take a dead head from him when he met the G&F officer to try and get a receipt.
I don't waste my time and theirs on the small dead heads, I just hang them in a tree and keep on going.

LAST EDITED ON May-07-18 AT 11:02PM (MST)[p]Do you know the reasons they confiscated your brother's?

That potentially happening is what keeps me from doing it. In the unlikely event I have cell service once I get to it so that I could text them pics and coordinates and get assurances in advance, I'd be willing to pack it out. But I'm not willing to put in all the work if there is a chance they'll confiscate it. It's a pretty decent hike just to get to it...

My brother had cell service and called in while still on the mountain and got permission from a warden at the regional office. There happened to be another warden in the area and he checked in with him to purchase the head and get the receipt. The first warden had talked to the second telling him what had happened, but he confiscated it anyways saying to him that you are not supposed to pick up dead heads.
My other brother happened to know the director of that regional office and after a phone call everything eventually got sorted out a few weeks later and he got the head back. If he hadn't personally known the regional supervisor I am not sure he would have gotten it back.

I once found an exceptionally big dead head that I definitely wanted to keep. What I did was leave it in the woods where I found it (well hidden of course) and got pictures and GPS coordinates. I then got permission from the warden for that area and made sure to have it in writing in a text message. I went back a few weeks later, recovered it, and purchased it from the state without any problems.
