McGregor Range Oryx

My brother who is currently stationed at Fort Bliss, TX drew this oryx tag recently and I am planning on going down for the hunt. He drew the elk tag there last year so has spent a decent amount of time on the range itself along with training out there for work. This is a two day hunt first part of December. Just curious to see some input from others of this hunt regarding if a guy should hold out for a big bull or shoot the first bull you see. We are working on building a glassing platform in the back of the pickup for better viewing of the oryx out on the range per advice from others. Any help would be appreciated, thanks everyone.

I hunted the MacGregor tag on my last oryx hunt. Was truly a great hunt. A lot of different habitat. If he has been on the range, he probably knows the better areas. They are there. but unlike White Sands hunts, they are difficult to find.

There is still some monsters on MacGregor that are not broken up. A lot of area and a lot of cover.

I connected with a beat up bull with huge bases. The biologist said they were the biggest that year. He might have been a 5 X 5 in length. He was a fighter.

The biologist is extremely helpful. Lots of emails back and forth.
I would think the military is given the same choice.

He is looking at a great hunt. Do not shoot the small one on opening morning!

If you Google it you can see the measurements and success per hunter for the last several years. That should give you an idea on what to hold out for. I don't know if the above is a typo, but if you see a 60" Oryx anywhere, shoot it immediately...

LAST EDITED ON May-29-18 AT 02:25PM (MST)[p]I have never been on McGregor but here's a 4 part video (in order from top to bottom) from a hunt at Ft. Bliss that might be interesting. I came upon it while searching for information for my daughter's youth hunt.

Good luck!

Im guessing he means 5"x5" and was completely broken off.

You are correct 5" X 5". What could he have been. He was broken up several times to lose all that horn.

I do have a 39" x 39" cow. On that hunt, I heard someone got a 44" cow. Never saw it.

My other oryx was a 32" bull on the Joranada experimental farms. This was south of the Organ mountains and was a true hunt. On the Joranada , you stepped on Indian artifacts almost every step.
