Hello,
I am new to this forum I have a late cow elk hunt In unit 13 I amcurious if anyone has ever hunted it horseback I have horses ready for the hunt. I have never hunted this unit before I have hunted quite a bit in 51 and 52 also 15 and 6a/6c. Any advice on trailheads to go in on horses would be very helpful I can also help in the units I posted above. I'm not asking for any honey holes or good areas just places where I could ride in and do some scouting.

No need for horses in unit 13. You will find elk not far from any road. Should be able to back the truck right to it. Unless you want to pass up all the small cows and head deap into the forest for that trophy cow then take the horses. LOL.

Ok bowdeadly thank you lol am not to sure what to expect in this unit I had a friend tell me horses are necessary and a couple of friends told me they are everywhere.

There are some parts of the unit that would benefit from having ponies. I guess it depends on how big of a deal you want to make the hunt.

Ok that's what I have heard it is a very large unit I'm not sure where to begin I plan on doing some scouting I'm not sure whether I'm better off starting towards Datil or the other side near the Malpais.

If I was gonna try and kill a bull I'd be taking horses ,but for a cow not so much. That should be a fun one!

Elk hunt Horseback just go together IMO. I would use them it kind why we feed them all year for. RIGHT

Since you are unfamiliar with the unit and if you are gonna be out there the entire hunt then maybe it would be a good idea to take the horses. Ride in a way , cover some ground and learn the area for when you draw a bull tag. I have been doing that in the gila for 9 years on my Sep deer hunts getting to know elk areas. Well I know where all the elk are but just can't draw the damn tag. LOL

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-18 AT 12:44PM (MST)[p]Not going to need horses, there are elk everywhere in that unit, just watch out for the chupacabra they are also everywhere. Have fun, post pictures.

I've never been on an elk hunt I didn't need horses. 4 quarters, back straps, tenderloins, neck meat and what ever else you take is still heavy....even if it is a cow elk . Love hunting elk with horses.

I take mine every where . Like gator said I feed em for a reason. Even if you don't "NEED" it makes for a better time I think!
I agree with rough country, let them do the heavy lifting.

See how much better those pictures look with a guy on horseback and Packmule carrying the elk. BEAT those pictures of a guy with a back pack.
Awesome pictures

Thanks gator! Gotta justify the feed bill some how!
There's just something about seeing a set of horns on a pack mule that sinks in!

For straight meat packing I really like the iron cloth panniers buddy. My all around set up is the Weaver panniers and top pack. You can fit the whole house in them.
