Elk, Deer, E-PLUS Rules

I saw a lot of potential changes that look promising. Some of the unit tag increases and decreases seemed spot on in my opinion

www.wildlife.state.nm.us

go to this website and look under commission proposals. Currently landowners in "outside COER" are allowed to hunt beginning Oct. 1. Public draw hunters wait until mid Oct. to hunt. I don't think this is consistent with the North American Model of Wildlife Management. Just my .02 cents.

Guess you have to poke the beehive to get some reaction!!

Seriously, the elk and deer rules are open to determine what hunting is for the next four years.

E-PLUS is open for the first time since 2005.

Does anybody care what is going on?

Hello????????????

And we wonder how NMDGF makes decisions with no public hunter input!!!!

Just complain about it later????

Went to Socooro Wed. to hear NMG&F proposals & options.
Public comment period is open,online.
There will be meetings for Gen.Public . Places & dates online too.
Much needed reviews & ideas being discussed.
So instead of twittering about, read & ask ?'s

Just to keep everyone updated, this is the time to submit comments and ideas that will affect the elk and deer rules for the next four years. E-PLUS is open for the first time since 2005 when it was passed. Please educate yourselves on how this affects you. As i said before, O-PLUS landowners (secondary zone landowners in current proposal) are allowed to hunt Oct. 1 with a rifle while public hunters (in GMU's 13, 17, 21B, 22, 23, and 24) have to wait until mid-October to hunt. GMU's 13 and 17 hunters are restricted to muzzleloader hunts.

I'll be at the Albuquerque meeting. Wouldn't doubt it's just to entertain us. All the same if we don't show up n let our thoughts be heard we can't expect anything to change.

If you are not upset about the status of elk tags in new mexico, you should be.

The facts:

1: look at the landowner lists for 21b. Add up inside and outside the coer. Now look in the proclamation. Does 600 landowner tags to 150 public tags sound fair?????? If so great, just keep quiet when you don't draw out.

2: are you cool with landowners hunting October 1st with a rifle? In the prime of the rut? Last I checked only governer tag auction or raffle winners can do that, you cool with landowners hunting the rut when everyone else has to wait????? Cool, then keep quiet when outfitters are posting pics of 400" bulls when you are struggling to find a 6x6.

3: you like the sound of jackwagons with an acre of land in a subdivision getting an elk tag every year???? Great, keep your mouth shut and let these welfare ranchers screw over your hunting opportunities.

4: you cool with landowners getting unit wide tags and locking up their property? Did you know unit wide tag holders have to open their properties to public hunters? Ever try to find a map or to access these properties???? You cool with them screwing the public hunter over????? Great, then don't get on here griping about locked gates.

GET LOUD!!!!!!!! The rule is open and it can change, but the window of opportunity is closing!!!!!!!!! Send an email to [email protected]

Or you can just do nothing, but expect no sympathy from those who recognize this disgrace and want it fixed.

I wasn?t able to read the proclamation so forgive my ignorance, but is this a way for NR?s to get more tags?
If so is this NMG&F?s way to fix a loss of revenue to the communities (if any) from the NR coming to the area?

I agree with you on this being the time to make some noise and be heard. I am trying to see some of your points, but I am not able to on some.

1. I added them up and only came up with 490 landowner tags. When you look at the ratio to private to public land where the elk would actually be this seems to make sense to have a 3 to 1 ratio.

2. In the outside the COER areas, landowners being able to hunt starting Oct 1st is currently the way it is. That is not a change for the outside the COER area. I guess if you still have an issue it then fine, but this is not a change for outside the COER.

3. When I read the proposal this is what it says it is trying to fix. They want to tighten up the SCR. So are you saying you agree with proposal on this one?

4. Again when I read the proposal this is another issue it is dealing with. They are making stiffer penalties when this occurs.

I think there are changes that need to be made and I am glad that is seems that they are moving in the right direction. There are comments that I am sure I will send the Departments way. I completely agree with BugleNM though. I feel it is something they have to do, but don't really think comments and showing up to meetings changes how they feel. Went to antelope one and pretty much everyone there was against it and it didn't seem to make a difference. At least at the end of day I can say I tried.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-31-18 AT 06:16AM (MST)[p]I am not nearly as spun up on this stuff as you guys but I am drafting a letter at lunch today. My 2 biggest issues is one, why so many people with 1-10 acres get UW tags. I don't like how CO does business for hunters but even there you have to own a pretty significant piece of property to get a tag. Hunting is supposed to be a family activity and they are making it harder when a UW tag in GMU is going for $1000! Most of these tags should be in the lottery so that we get more opportunities for our kids and family.
The other is how nobody holds the landowners accountable. Heaven forbid I'm missing a $4 stamp on my license but a landowner will lock his gate and Game and Fish says, there isn't anything we can do.
So yes I'm drafting a letter today at lunch. I think I will make it a daily routine To email it at the beginning and end of each work day to the address they provide for comments.
There are 8 of us here on this thread, if everyone does the same that is 16 emails a day they will receive. And if each of us recruits one person to do the same, well.....
Thoughts?

UW bull tags more like 5-15k

Great thread. Just finished reading the proposals. a few thoughts.

1. i hate the proposed reduction in youth tags and the creation of 65 and older hunt. Should we not be getting more youth access and hunting?

2. I love to hunt 37. what are the ramifications of creating a COER?

3. Looked at the deer proposals. thought they looked sound.

thoughts? have i overlooked anything?

Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jul-31-18 AT 08:53AM (MST)[p]2legit is pretty much spot on. NM is on the verge of turning into TX. the public is getting screwed unless you have big $$$.

I have problems with the disproportionate level of political clout NM landowners have in comparison to the public when is comes to hunting. But only when all the public land in New Mexico gets converted to private will we be like Texas.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-31-18 AT 12:00PM (MST)[p]GMU 13: Possibly adjust COER boundary to the west (Narrows area). ??What does that mean?....map??

GMU 9: Eliminate all cow hunts and reduce bull hunts. FINALLY AFTER 20+YEARS AND NO ELK LEFT PUBLIC LAND AND DOES IT APPLY TO PRIVATE LAND AS WELL?
o Possibly adjust COER boundaries to the east to include some elk winter range. ???MAP???

Not to turn this into a politics rant but did all of you see where the Dems stand on this issue? They all said more outfitter and land tags should be made available. Voting has consequences, I am done.

1-acre getting tags is a joke as well if they get unit wide they should have to have their property map available online.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-18 AT 01:52PM (MST)[p]saw the map, thanks Bugle. so what does COER addition mean? more landowner tags???

Guys we really need to try to attend these meetings. I know most of us have a 40 hour week job and are constantly having to miss the meetings due to scheduling during work hours in the middle of a work week, but this meeting should be easily doable for most of us please come to the meetings and show support even if you do not completely understand the situation at least be present and support everyone here in numbers

Am I misunderstanding this. I thought Outside the COER was going to unlimited tags but the COER area were going to be controlled more. I am trying to get everything sorted out before sending my comments.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-18 AT 09:10PM (MST)[p]>>In the units I was concerned
>>with ,yes!
>Well that's different, as I said,
>1K for GMU 9.

I don't see anywhere you said 1000 unit 9.. all u see is 1000 for GMU

They are wanting to increase cow elk tags in 34 to 350 per hunt code and 120 for youth hunts. Do you guys think 34 can take an increase in tags? I don't. If you agree we are running out of time to give public comment.

Nope I do not agree with that. Seems like they're trying to turn the elk in 34 into a unit 2$ deer hunt. I would not mind seeing the youth get increased .
