Hi All- I've got a 2B deer tag...last rifle hunt and I'm very excited. I am asking anyone who has pics of the terrain, forage, etc to post pics. If you'd prefer, you can email to [email protected]. Trying to be as prepared as possible for my hunt. Thanks!

With the drought this is pretty accurate for what it looks like

No rain this year, huh? That's a bummer. That's pretty funny though.

Ya right more like 100 forkies running around. Sorry but 2B is not what It used to be. Im Sure their are a few giants around somewhere but that goes for every unit. If we have another shitty winter your best bet is to shoot a fork they taste better anyway. Lol

Every unit is "not what it once was." Honestly, name one state where the mule deer hunting is better now than 30 years ago? I am just hoping to see lots of deer and if I come across a 150'ish type buck, I'll shoot him. I'm staying positive. :)

There are a couple of units here that are better today than I have seen ever. It's really nice to see them making a come back! Geno's right though, a few forkies and a ?pile of does. Good luck man!

Odds are in your favor in having the last rifle in Nov. You'd be surprised what deer will come out of the woodwork the closer it gets to the rut.

That being said, the rut may be compromised a bit if the does' diet throws off their estrus cycle because of the drought conditions we've had.

A 150" buck is possible, but don't pass up a 130" the first hour of light on opneing day either...

The knothead forkies will be taken out on the youth hunt in Oct, so anything you see will likely be a bit bigger. Spend time on GoogleEarth to find potential water tanks and guzzlers. That's where the deer will have lived for the past few months.

BigChief and roadrunner...I appreciate your help. I'd eat my tag before I kill a 130'ish buck on opening morning. Can't shoot a 140"er if you kill the first 130 you see. LOL! Thanks again. Good luck on the ML hunt.

Pm received roadrunner. I appreciate it.

Don?t shoot a 130? on opening day. If you have your sights set on a big buck, go in there willing to eat your tag and hunt hard. You can turn up a good one. And if not, who cares, go look at a lot of deer and have fun. PM sent.

Keep your chin up! The drought as nasty as its been never dried up the lake or river so there has been food and water for those deer. Sure the weather helps as far as the deer migration but, there are plenty of resident deer there. The unit is big and genetically the potential for bruiser bucks is there. The deer numbers might be down but hard work and determination goes a long way. My advice, get a cooler of cold beer, find a few trucks at quiting time with the long pole with an orange flag on it. These are the guys that work on the oil wells, offer them a beer and they are often happy to point you in the right direction. I'll be up there in January chasing them so my spots must remain a mystery. Good luck, as your hunt approaches I might give a spot or two!

+ 1 , genetics are great. Hike into areas others aren't and you'll increase your odds. Yes lots and lots of roads but with research you can find spots where not many go ....just saying

Thanks for the reply's guys. I appreciate that.

Muleywhisperer- I wish you luck on your Jan hunt. I can give you info if you'd like after my hunt is done. Thanks!

Best advice I can give you is put your boots on the ground and get away from the truck and utv circus that will be happening on all the dirt roads. I also will be tagging along with my brother on that same hunt. Good luck and have fun.

I've hunted the Jan season. Get up high where you can see the sage flats/benches. People kill bucks driving around but usually forkies.

Those closed roads are a great place to start.
Hope you do well.
Camp away from the noisy rigs Hard to get to sleep if you are to close.

Just looked at the forecast for Silverton, CO. Looks like a bunch of snow moving in this weekend, possibly over 10?. Is this the area these deer migrate in from? Hoping this early snow helps move some deer into the unit.

Most of the deer that come into 2B come from further East.

Man, I hope CO gets some early snow. My hunt is still a month away but I'm getting anxious.

The SNOTEL website is showing 1" on Wolfcreek and Cumbres right now and NOAA is showing winter storm weather this weekend as well. Same thing happened last year with an early snowstorm.

Deer for unit 2 migrate as far away as Creed, CO.

I have the Oct 27th - 31st hunt, if you guys don't mind, please keep me posted on the snow fall in the higher elevations around 2B,thanks ???.Guardrail

My 2B hunt dates Oct 27th thru the 31st falls just after the full moon on the 24th, you guys have any tips about hunting mule deer in a big waning moon? I will basically be out all day on the hunt. This is my first mule deer hunt since 1986, Any help much appreciated...???..

Forget moon waning/ waxing status. The mature bucks IMO will only be showing themselves briefly both early morning and late evening. Position your self to glass and pattern the movements of a buck you want.
